Notizen: The effect of molecular weight heterogeneity on the second virial coefficient A2 in good solvents is studied for binary mixtures of monodisperse poly(α-methylstyrenes). It is concluded that A2 for polymer mixtures passes through a maximum with variation of the mixing ration. From comparison with the data, it is concluded that no available theory quantitatively explains both the molecular weight dependence of A2 of monodisperse polymer and the variation of A2 of mixtures with the mixing ratio. The interpenetration function for two polymer coils with different molecular weights is discussed on the assumption that the thermodynamic interaction between two polymer coils in good solvents can be approximated by a hard-sphere model.

Notizen: On electrochemical initiation of alternating copolymerizations of styrene-acrylonitrile (AN) and styrene-diethyl fumarate (DEF) in the presence of ZnCl2, radical anions of AN-ZnCl2 and DEF-ZnCl2 complexes produced at the cathode were assumed to initiate copolymerization. In analogy with the cathode-initiated copolymerization, the radical anions of AN-ZnCl2 and DEF-ZnCl2, generated with the carbanions such as sodium naphthalene, disodium α-methylstyrene tetramer dianion, and butyllithium, were also found to produce alternating copolymers of styrene-AN and styrene-DEF. On the contrary, no polymers were obtained from methyl methacrylate (MMA)-styrene and methacrylonitrile (MAN)-styrene in the presence of ZnCl2 either with carbanions or by electrochemical reduction. Styrene-MAN-ZnCl2 yielded an alternating copolymer with carbanions upon introduction of oxygen.

Beschreibung: Discharges of Purkinje cells were recorded from the vermis, lobules VI and VII, of a monkey trained to track a visual target. When the monkey tracked a sinusoidally oscillating target, cellular activity changes in phase with the velocity signal of the eye movement. When the monkey fixated a stationary point, almost identical modulation in activity occurred, reflecting the velocity signal of the motion of the retinal image of the target. The data suggest that the vermis participates in the control of smooth pursuit eye movements by providing the oculomotor system with the actual target velocity information which is the sum of eye velocity and retinal image velocity signals.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kase, M -- Noda, H -- Suzuki, D A -- Miller, D C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Aug 17;205(4407):717-20.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/111350" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
