Notes: Using a flourescence-detected ethidium displacement assay, the calf thymus DNA complexation properties of 27 mono-, di-, tri-, tetra- and hexacationic polyamines were determined. The DNA-binding affinity of these polyamine compounds increased with increasing cationic charge on the polyamine. Although most of the compounds exhibited no base pair binding selectivity, two of the tricationic polyamines possessing additional neutral amine groups exhibited approximately tenfold GC binding selectivities.

Notes: Time-resolved vibrational chemiluminescence from HF has been recorded following the production of F atoms by the pulsed laser photolysis (λ = 266 nm) of F2 in the presence of HCl, CH4, and CF3H. In the first two cases, experiments have been conducted by observing emission from HF(ν = 3) at four temperatures from 295 to 139 K. Rate constants have been determined over this range of temperature for the reactions of F atoms with HCl and CH4 and of CH3 radicals with F2, and for the relaxation of HF(ν = 3) by HCl and CH4. The reaction of F atoms with CF3H is slower than those with HCl and CH4 and measurements on the emission from HF(ν = 2) have been used to infer rate constants for reaction and relaxation only at 295 K. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The relative rate technique has been used to measure the hydroxyl radical (OH) reaction rate constant of hexamethyldisiloxane (MM, (CH3)3Si-O-Si(CH3)3), octamethyltrisiloxane (MDM, (CH3)3Si-O-Si(CH3)2-O-Si(CH3)3), and decamethyltetrasiloxane (MD2M, (CH3)3Si-O-Si(CH3)2-O-Si(CH3)2-O-Si(Ch3)3). Hexamethyldisiloxane, octamethyltrisiloxane, and decamethyltetrasiloxane react with OH with bimolecular rate constants of 1.32 ± 0.05 × 10-12 cm3molecule-1s-1, 1.83 ± 0.09 × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1s-1, and 2.66 ± 0.13 × 10-12 cm3molecule-1s-1, respectively. Investigation of the OH + siloxane reaction products yielded trimethylsilanol, pentamethyldisiloxanol, heptamethyltetrasiloxanol, hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, and other compounds. Several of these products have not been reported before because these siloxanes and the proposed reaction mechanisms yielding these products are complicated. Some unusual cyclic siloxane products were observed and their formation pathways are discussed in light of current understanding of siloxane atmospheric chemistry. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: An improved method has been used to synthesize perfluoroazo-2-propane. Pyrolysis over the temperature range 450-514 K in a static system has been shown to be a homogeneous, first-order process. No pressure dependence was observed in the presence of excess inert gas (SF6). The only products were nitrogen and perfluoro-2,3-dimethylbutane. The rate constant (k) for the decomposition process is given by: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \log \left({{k \mathord{\left/{\vphantom {k s}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} s}^{- 1}} \right) = 16.7 \pm 0.2 - {{\left({9856 \pm 109} \right)} \mathord{\left/{\vphantom {{\left({9856 \pm 109} \right)} T}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} T} $$\end{document} These results lead to a straightforward mechanism for the decomposition process The results are compared with those for other azo compounds. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Elementary bimolecular processes that involve formation of a chemically activated intermediate species are common. We address the general problem of modeling these processes and describe the necessary and sufficient information that must be specified to assure that a kinetics model will extrapolate the rate constants for those reactions over wide ranges of temperature and pressure. The approach is illustrated for the system centered around the HOCO intermediate. Here, specification of the temperature and pressure dependence of three rate constants, k(T,P) and the temperature dependence of two equilibrium constants, K(T), is necessary and sufficient, viz: Rate constants are cast in the form of an analytical expression, suggested by Troe, and appropriate parameters are tabulated.

Notes: Single-channel hindered Gorin model RRKM calculations were performed on reaction (1). Good agreement between theory and experiment was obtained for the temperature and pressure dependence of reaction (1). Isotopic data for the reverse association reaction, (-1), reported previously, are consistent with the model. Rate constants were cast in the form of an analytical expression and appropriate parameters were tabulated.
