Notes: The radiation crosslinking of poly(vinyl chloride), PVC, with trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, TMPTMA, has been examined. The polyfunctional TMPTMA undergoes rapid polymerization incorporating the PVC into a three-dimensional network. The kinetics and mechanism of these crosslinking reactions were studied with particular reference to dose dependence and thermal treatment. The gel was rapidly formed with a TMPTMA polymerization rate greater than that of the PVC grafting reaction. Only 30-40% of the available bonds were used in the initial polymerization. The remaining 60-70% of the double bonds predominantly react in the final stages of crosslinking (80-100% gelation). The macroscopic properties (e.g., solubility, glass transition temperatures, mechanical characteristics, etc.) of the PVC-TMPTMA blend are discussed in terms of the molecular crosslinking mechanism. The effect of thermal treatment, during and after irradiation, on the reaction rates and mechanism is examined.

Notes: The compatibility of mixtures of poly(2,3-dichloro-1-propyl acrylate) and poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate) has been investigated by measurement of the following properties: density, light transmission, glass transition temperature, vapor absorption, and NMR relaxation times. To varying degrees, all results provided evidence supporting the contention that these mixtures are compatible.

Notes: The mobilities of polymer chain segments in mixtures of rubber and carbon black were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance. Spin-spin relaxation time (T2) measurements on cis-polybutadiene and ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) bound rubbers detected at least two relaxing regions: an immobile region and a relatively free region. The molecular motions in the relatively free region are still constrained compared to those of the pure gum.

Notes: Homogeneous films comprised of mixtures of polystyrene and poly(vinyl methyl ether) can be obtained by evaporation from a ternary solution containing toluene as the solvent. Heterogeneous films result when the solvent is trichloroethylene. The possibility that a heterogeneous film cast from trichloroethylene can be transformed to a homogeneous one by physical means is a logical expectation when the polymer-polymer interaction is favorable, though as yet no comprehensive report has appeared in the literature. We have accomplished the transformation by increasing the temperature. Optical microscopy and glass transition experiments were employed to observe the effects.

Description: In most of the experiments, 1 pps pulses of the station atomic clocks were exchanged between the partners, and a cubic equation was fitted to the 1000 to 2000 second measurements. The equations were exchanged and substracted to obtain the time difference of the stations. The standard deviation in the fit of the equations varied, depending on conditions, from 1.5 ns to 16 ns. For the last month of the Hermes experiment, a 1 MHz signal was used, giving a standard deviation of 0.18 ns. The comparison of the time scales via satellite and via Loran-C (BIH Circular D) show clearly that some Loran-C links are very good, but that the NBS link varies by 1 micron s. Via the satellite the frequencies of the time scales can be compared with an accuracy of 2 x 10 to the minus 14 power.

Description: Composite structures have the potential to be cost effective, structurally efficient primary aircraft structures. As part of the Advanced Composite Technology (ACT) program to exploit this potential for heavily loaded aircraft structures, the design and fabrication of the technology integration box beam (TIBB) was completed. The TIBB is an advanced composite prototype structure for the center wing section of the Lockheed C-130 aircraft. The TIBB was tested for downbending, upbending, torsion, and combined upbending and torsion load conditions to verify the design. The TIBB failed at 83 percent of design ultimate load for the combined upbending and torsion load condition. Current analytical and experimental results are described for a study of the mechanisms that led to the failure of the TIBB. Experimental results include load, strain, and deflection data. An analytical study was conducted of the TIBB structural response. Analytical results include strain and deflection results from a global analysis of the TIBB.

Description: Results of regular monitoring of both the GOES and TRANSIT timing signals over a number of months at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), Boulder, Colorado are presented. The TRANSIT results include an analysis of how received timing accuracy and stability are affected by: (1) averaging over varying numbers of satellite passes; (2) averaging over different combinations of the five available satellites; (3) using several independent receivers of the same type; and (4) application of published corrections to the received data. Based on monitoring experience to date at NBS, some pros and cons of using each of the available operational systems are discussed. Updated information on recent improvements incorporated into the GOES time code generation and monitoring system at Wallops Island, Virginia is also included.
