Description / Table of Contents:
Nucleophilic Substitution of Carcinogenic and Noncarcinogenic Hydrocarbons via Electron Donator/Acceptor ComplexesWhen acidifying electron donator/acceptor complexes of pentacyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and tetrachloro-o-benzoquinone (1) with hydrochloric or hydrobromic acid, the electron is shifted completely to the acceptor even in the ground state. A radical cation of the aromatic hydrocarbon is being formed and smoothly substituted by the nucleophilic halide ion. Single or multiple halogenated products result, depending on the concentration of 1 (equimolecular or even multiples). At room temperature the yield is nearly quantitativ. Substitution takes place on different positions compared to direct halogenation. We suggest a mechanism of this reaction. The formation of radical cations may be of importance as the initial step in chemical carcinogenesis by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and related compounds.
Notes:
