    Notes: Cycloartenol (4), a natural plant sterol, was shown to be an effective membrane reinforcer; this was attributed to its conformation. We now present a conformational analysis of 4 by molecular modeling and NMR. Molecular modeling suggests that two conformations I and II coexist, differing mainly at the level of ring C, and of nearly equal energy, I and II each having ring A and B in a chair and half-chair conformation, respectively, with ring C 1,3-diplanar in I (solid-state structure as determined by X-ray crystallography) and in chair conformation in II. A complete assignment of the 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra of 4 and the entire coupling network in rings A and B is determined by various modern NMR techniques. The conformation of rings A and B thus determined is in agreement with conformations I and II. Low-temperature NMR experiments show a fast equilibrium between two conformations, presumably I and II. It is concluded, therefore, that the cyclopropane ring of 4 produces a flexibility at the level of ring C which may be important for the membrane properties.

    Notes: The 17O and 13C chemical shifts (δ) of 14 α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones and 33 acyl derivatives RXC = O (X = Cl, OH, OMe, OEt, NH2 and R = H or alkyl) have been measured. In the unsaturated carbonyl series, a correlation exists between δ 17O and the π electron density at the β-carbon atom. From this correlation, an δ 17O of 530 ppm was extrapolated for the loss of one electron at the oxygen atom. In the acyl series, the δr 17O were also sensitive to changes in the polarity of the carbon-oxygen bond. A partial correlation between 17O-NMR. chemical shifts and the nuclear quadrupole coupling constants exists for aldehydes, ketones, esters and amides but not for acyl chlorides.

    Notes: Complexation between crown ethers 12C4, 15C5, 18C6 and cryptand 222, and alkali cations Li+, Na+, K+ in various solvents were studied by 17O-NMR. spectroscopy. Small diamagnetic shifts arising from the cation electric field are observed. They increase according to the sequence K+ 〈 Na+ 〈 Li+. 17O-linewidth are discussed and compared to the 13C relaxation times. Linewidth modification results mainly from modifications of the effective correlation time. In general, for crown ethers, considerable line broadening occurs when the cation fits well into the cavity but line narrowing occurs when the cation is much smaller than the cavity.

Aliphatic aldehydes and ketones, additivity of substituent effects and correlation with 13C-NMR.The 17O-chemical shifts of 9 aldehydes, 22 aliphatic and 4 alicyclic ketones, in the natural abundance FT.-NMR. spectra followed a good correlation with the 13C-chemical shifts of the terminal C-atoms of corresponding methylene compounds. An additivity relation involving 6 parameters represents the 17O-shifts of 28 of the measured products with a standard deviation of 2.5 ppm. The additivity parameters are discussed with respect to the modifications of the polarity of the carbonyl group induced by the hyperconjugative interaction of π and π* orbitals with the πCH3 orbitals of the alkyl substituent groups.

    Notes: 14N-NMR. measurements using the Fourier Transform technique are presented and compared to C. W. experiments. The F. T. technique is especially advantageous for relaxation time measurements. However, since 14N-nuclei may have widely different relaxation times, it is often not possible to have optimal gain in sensitivity (as compared to C. W. measurements) in a single F. T. experiment for different 14N-nuclei contained in the same sample. Different experiments have to be performed, optimizing the spectrometer parameters for each 14N-resonance of appreciably different linewidth.The technique is applied to three different problems. 14N-relaxation in symmetrical ammonium salts is shown to arise from reorientation of the water dipoles. The use of a double spin-probe, 13C-14N, allows the determination of the electric field gradients in cyclic ammonium salts. The electronic distribution is especially distorted from tetrahedral symmetry in the highly strained N, N-dimethyl-aziridinium cation. Finally, electric and dynamic effects in ion pairing may be studied as shown on the case of tetrabutylammonium iodide in water and in benzene.

    Notes: The 13C- and 17O-chemical shifts of 31 aliphatic ethers are measured and discussed. The 17O-chemical shifts of the ethers ROR′ correlate with chemical shifts for the methylene groups of the corresponding alkanes RCH2R′. The constant of proportionality can be related to the orbital expansion term 〈r-3〉2p. The δc for carbon atoms can also be correlated with δc for the corresponding alkanes. The origin of the correlation is discussed taking into account the conformational modifications resulting from introduction of an oxygen atom in an alkyl chain.

    Notes: Binding of chloride anion by protonated polyamines was investigated by 35Cl—NMR spectroscopy. The presence of protonated macro(poly)cyclic polyamines caused downfield shifts and significant line broadening of the 53Cl—NMR signals. 35Cl—NMR spectroscopy was used for complex-formation stoichiometry determination and revealed the formation of a binuclear chloride complex with the fully protonated ditopic hexaazamacrocyclic receptor 6. 35Cl—NMR spectroscopy was also applied in competition experiments between Cl— and SO42- and demonstrated that the fully protonated macrocyclic hexaamine 4 forms a strong complex with SO4-2 with 1:1 stoichiometry.
