Notes: Thermogravimetric analysis of the reducing chlorination of aluminaThe kinetics of the chlorination of dehydrated alumina with (CO/Cl2) mixtures were studied in the temperature range of 400-900°. The temperature of dehydration of the alumina was shown to be critical for the reaction rates of the subsequent chlorination. Optimal reaction rates could be observed with equimolar (CO/Cl2) mixtures in the range of 600-700°. At higher temperatures, only a very small increase in reaction rates with increasing temperature could be observed which is thought to be due to the influence of gaseous diffusion gradients in the porous alumina and a progressive decrease in surface area. Granulometric as well as scanning electron microscope studies have shown that with progressing reaction the alumina particles become hollow while retaining their outer shape and size up to a high degree of conversion.

Notes: The kinetics of ethylene oxidation by air over a supported silver catalyst were investigated in the temperature range 490-620 K. The reaction network was found to be triangular. Under virtually constant oxygen partial pressure (0.2 bar), the following rate relationships, (in mol g-1s-1) were found: (formulae in curved brackets denote partial pressures) where R is expressed in J · mol-1 · K-1.The given rate expressions are discussed in the framework of earlier kinetic investigations.

Notes: A catalytic one step procedure for the C(1), C(2)-bond cleavage of long-chain aliphatic alcohols and ω-phenyl alcohols has been investigated, using as examples decanol, dodecanol, hexadecanol, benzyl alcohol, 2-phenylethanol and 3-phenyl-propanol. The reactions, which were carried out in a continuous flow tubular reactor using a Ni/Cu catalyst, showed good activity and selectivity with respect to the cleavage products. On the basis of the experimental studies a reaction scheme for the heterogeneous catalytic C(1), C(2)-bond cleavage of the alcohols is suggested.

Notes: A survey of the activity and selectivity of several catalysts for the amination of long-chain aliphatic alcohols with dimethylamine is given. The best results were obtained with Cu-catalysts whose long-term behaviour was investigated. The main reasons for catalyst decay are the irreversible adsorption of dimerization products and the thermal diffusive fusion of Cu-crystallites.
