Description / Table of Contents: Photoelectron Spectra of Phenylethynes, I. - Phenylethyne - Model Probe for Substituent EffectsThe four low energy π-orbitals of ethynylbenzene (1) respond differently to substitution at the alkyne site due to their respective symmetry properties. The gas phase He(I) PE spectra of the series 1 - 13 (C6H5 - C ≡ C — R) are presented and the energetic trend of the π- bands in relation to R is investigated. Relative inductive substituent effects for R - including R = H - are gained via [C6H5 —C≡C—]213 from a composite molecule MO model; they correspond with known substituent constants. The PE spectra of tolane (12) and of 13 suggest conformeric mixtures to be present; their composition is discussed on the basis of the PE data and of semiempirical MO calculations.
