Description / Table of Contents: 2-Pyridinamine Adducts of Transition Metal Bis(acetylacetonates) and their Reactions. Hydrogencarbonate as a Chelating Ligand in cis-(Ampy)2Co(acac)(HCO3)The reaction of cobalt(II) salts, acetylacetone (acacH), 2-pyridinamine (Ampy), and the carbon dioxide of the air in methanol affords a mixture of (Ampy)2Co(acac)2(II) and (Ampy)2Co(CO3)(H2O)2. On heating in toluene, appropriately in the presence of carbon dioxide, these complexes are converted into cis-(Ampy)2Co(acac)(HCO3) (III). Characteristic of compound III is a four-membered ring with the hydrogencarbonate as a bidentate ligand. The two Co—O distances are distinctly different (215.9 and 224.4 pm).In the complexes II and III 2-pyridinamine is a bidentate ligand coordinating by the endo-nitrogen. The Co-n-N bond lengths vary between 210.9 and 225.3 pm. Reasons are both the different trans-influence of the hydrogencarbonate or the acetylacetonato donor atoms and the π-interaction between cobalt(II) and the pyridine ring. This interaction is more significant in the cis-complex III. II and III are stabilized by a system of N—H … O- and O—H …O-bridges.With nickel(II) complexes analogous to II and III were obtained, while only the type II was characterized for manganese(II).

Description / Table of Contents: Exchange of Metal Ions in the System Acetylacetonate/Halide/Tetrahydrofuran.As bifunctional Lewis bases metal bis(acetyl-acetonates) react with zinc(II) chloride under formation of binuclear complexes (THF)2M(acac)2ZnCl2 (M = Ni, Co, Mg). The octahedral and the tetrahedral centre of these compounds are connected by tridentate oxygen atoms of the two acetylacetonato ligands which are simultaneously part of a four-membered ring MOZnO. The addition is combined with a deformation of the octahedral centre, as a prerequisite of a closest package of the atoms within the MOZnO ring. With mercury(II) chloride the metal bis(acetylacetonates) react as tetrafunctional Lewis bases. In the trinuclear complexes (THF)2M(acac)2(HgCl2)2 (M = Co, Ni, Mg) the interaction between the three coordination centres is weak. No structural change of the octahedral centre (THF)2M(acac)2 is found, but the HgCl2 group diverge slightly from linearity.A ligand exchange was observed in the following cases: (a)Reaction of vanadium(III) chloride with Co(acac)2 under formation of [(THF)2V(acac)2][(THF)CoCl3] (transition of the acetylacetonato ligands to the higher valent central atom).(b)Reaction of magnesium halides with M(acac)2 and formation of (THF)3Mg(acac)2MX2(c)Formation von (THF)3Co(acac)(μ - C1)ZnC12 (V) by the reaction of Zn(acac)2 with cobalt(l1) chlorideIn the complex V the octahedral ccntrc of cobalt(II) is connected with the tetrahedral centre of zinc(I1) by tridentate oxygen atom of the acetylacetonato ligand and a chloro bridge (formation of the four-membered CoClZnO cycle with a closest package of the atoms).A driving force for reaction c is the formation of the stable tetrahedral OZnCI3 group. Important for the li- gand exchange according to c is the stability of the octa- hcdral MgO6 moiety and the easy formation of the tetra- hedral MO2X2 group with a transition metal ion.(THF)3Co(acac)(μ-CI)(HgCl2) (VI) is isoslruclural with V. But there is a marked diffcrence between the bond angles of the tetrahedral central atom including the termi- nal chloro ligands (120.7° for V; 143.7° for VI).The crystal structure of (THF)3Co(acac)(μ-CI)ZnCl2 (V) was determined by X-ray diffraction: monoclinic; space group P2,/n; Z = 4; a = 1 177.4(5); b = 1628.9(4); c = 1284.2(6) pm; β = 99.54(4)°; R = 6.71 % for 2160 observed reflections.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of Ring Size and Substitution on the Oxidative Addition of Cyclic Carboxylic Acid Anhydrides and Imides to the Moiety (N N)Niº (N N = bipy, tetramethylethylenediamine)(dipy)(COD) or a mixture of tmed/Ni(COD)2 easily react with cyclic carboxylic acid anhydrides by an oxidative addition. After decarbonylation with succinic acid anhydride a five-membered, with glutaric acid anhydride a six-membered metallacycle are formed - or With diphenic acid anhydride we obtained a seven-membered chelate in the boat form (XIV). Along their bond axis the two aromatic rings are twisted by 127°, i.e. the conjugative interaction is weak.Itaconic acid anhydride, as a polar olefine, can coordinate to the moiety (tmed)Ni side-on. But also on oxidative addition, yielding the five-membered chelate (XVI), is possible. The five-membered chelate is the only Product of the reaction with (dipy)Ni(COD).1.8-naphthalic acid anhydride (NSA), because of its rigidity, is not suitable for an oxidative addition to electron-rich nickel(O) complexes. But as a π acceptor ligand with a relatively low half wave potential NSA displaces COD of (dipy)Ni(COD) forming (dipy)Ni(NSA) · 0.25 THF (XVIII). One of the final products of the acidolysis of [(dipy)Ni]2(PPI) · 1.5 THF (XIX PPI=N-phenyl phthalimide) is benzanilide, a compound which might be an indicator of an oxidative additive connected with an -bond breaking in the course of the synthesis of XIX. But ir-data shows the framework of PPI to be preserved in the complex XIX. Evidently the bond breaking proceeds in the course of the acidolysis.

Notes: O- and N-Alkylsubstituted 2-(2′-Hydroxyphenyl)-benzimidazoles and -1,3,4-Oxadiazoles as Complexing and Extracting Agents for Copper-II-Ions2-(2′-Alkoxyphenyl)-benzimidazoles 1, 1-alkyl-2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)-benzimidazoles 2, 2-(2′hydroxy-4′-alkoxyphenyl)-benzimidazoles 3, 2-(2′,4′-dialkoxyphenyl)-benzimidazoles 4 and 1-alkyl-2-(2′-hydroxy-5′-nitrophenyl)-benzimidazoles 7 are synthesized by condensation of 2-hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives and o-phenylenediamine or its derivatives. Alkyl chains C4, C8 or C12 are introduced by alkylation before or after the ring closure in order to increase the solubility of the reagent in toluene or n-octane. Furthermore the extraction properties of the benzimidazoles are investigated. Also some new analogous compounds of the benzothiazole and the 1,3,4-oxadiazole series were synthesized.

Description / Table of Contents: Reactions of [Li(TMED)2] [Co(COD)2] with π-Acceptor LigandsThe isoelectronic complexe [Li(TMED)2][Co(COD)2] und (dipy)Ni(COD) are compared as to their reactions with bifunctional nitrogen ligands (1, 4-Diaza-1, 3-diene, α, α′-bipyridine). In each case mixed ligand complexes of the type Li[)Co(COD)] (Solv)x (Solv = THF, TMED) are obtained. The magnetic properties, to a high degree, depend on the π-acceptor strength of the nitrogen ligand. Both diamagnetic (electron configuration 3d10 of cobalt) and paramagnetic complexes, such as Li[(tgd)Co(COD)] (Solv)x, (cobalt (0) with a 3d9-configuration and the radical anion tgd-), are formed (tgd = glyoxal[bis (4-methylphenylimin].[Li(TMED)2] [(dipy)Co(COD)] (IV) reacts with MSA by substitution of COD. In a solution of IV in THF surplus MSA is polymerised. It is unknown, whether the complex IV or TMED as a part of IV are the initiators of the polymerisation.
