The marine environment possesses a poor capacity to respond to the impact caused by oil hydrocarbons, not only for the low concentration of nutrients available (nitrogen and phosphorus), but also for the low frequency of appearance of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria. Keeping in mind the possibility offered by immobilized cells for transforming oil without needing cellular duplication, the present work shows a study carried out to define whether it is necessary or not to add nutrients to the BIOIL (hydrocarbonoclastic product with immobilized cells). It was demonstrated through High Resolution Gas Chromatography that it is not necessary to add nutrients to seawater for the occurrence of efficient oil hydrocarbon degradation by BIOIL and this product action is not inhibited by high concentrations of hydrocarbons (up to 8%).
