Notes: Abstract The isotope shift and hyperfine structure in a rhenium hollow cathode discharge was studied for transitions of the type 5d 56s7s → 5d 56s6p and 5d 56s6d → 5d 56s6p through Doppler-free saturation absorption laserspectroscopy and high resolution interferometry. Taking configuration mixing in the lower levels of 5d 56s6p under consideration, we obtain average configuration isotope shift values for 5d 56s7s of −1760(100) MHz and for 5d 56s6d of −1970(200) MHz. These experimental values compare extremely well with the theoretically predicted configuration isotope shifts in rhenium, based on pseudo-relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations, of −1710 MHz and −1940 MHz, resp. In addition hyperfine structure constants for rhenium levels of 5d 56s6d are reported here for the first time.

Notes: Abstract The fine structure (fs) and hyperfine structure (hfs) level scheme of Am I is reanalysed using a semi empirical fitting procedure which incorporates experimental data. Especially new laserspectroscopic measurements of the hfs of some electronic transitions in the Am atom enables us to make a more detailed analysis of 5f 7 7s 7p fine structure in Am I. In particular a relation is given between theB-factor values and the value of the nuclear electric quadrupole moment of241Am independent of a calibration by results of nuclear spectroscopy.

Description: To correct for the spherical aberration in the Hubble Space Telescope primary mirror, five anamorphic aspheric mirrors representing correction for three scientific instruments have been fabricated as part of the development of the corrective-optics space telescope axial-replacement instrument (COSTAR). During the acceptance tests of these mirrors at the vendor, a quick and simple method for verifying the asphere surface figure was developed. The technique has been used on three of the aspheres relating to the three instrument prescriptions. Results indicate that the three aspheres are correct to the limited accuracy expected of this test.

Description: Described is an unobscured three mirror wide angle telescopic imaging system comprised of an input baffle which provides a 20 deg (Y axis) x 30 deg (X axis) field of view, a primary mirror having a convex spherical surface, a secondary mirror having a concave ellipsoidal reflecting surface, a tertiary mirror having a concave spherical reflecting surface. The mirrors comprise mirror elements which are offset segments of parent mirrors whose axes and vertices commonly lie on the system's optical axis. An iris diaphragm forming an aperture stop is located between the secondary and tertiary mirror with its center also being coincident with the optical axis and being further located at the beam waist of input light beams reflected from the primary and secondary mirror surfaces. At the system focus following the tertiary mirror is located a flat detector which may be, for example, a TV imaging tube or a photographic film. When desirable, a spectral transmission filter is placed in front of the detector in close proximity thereto.

Description: The optical system for the proposed Lyman/Far UV Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) orbiting observatory is described and illustrated with drawings and graphs of predicted performance. The system comprises (1) an FUV channel based on a 1.84-m-diameter Rowland circle spectrograph with five high-density modified ellipsiodal near-normal-incidence gratings and an array of four MAMA detectors; (2) an EUV channel with ellipsoidal mirror, planar varied-line-space grating, microchannel-plate array, and wedge-and-strip anode detector; (3) a 70-cm Wolter II glancing-incidence telescope; and (4) a CCD-detector fine-error sensor to provide accurate pointing (within 200 marcsec rms). The resolving powers of the spectrographs are 30,000 in the FUV and 300-600 (wavelength-dependent) in the EUV.
