Notes: Abstract A series of 72 measurements of the acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) mixing ratio were made in the lower troposphere during TROPOZ II. These measurements are the first ever made of the background level of this trace gas in the free troposphere. The data show a vertical decrease of the CH3CHO mixing ratio with increasing altitude and indicate higher CH3CHO concentrations in the Northern Hemisphere — in general agreement with a model-derived average CH3CHO distribution. Deviations of the observed CH3CHO mixing ratios from the modelled mean distribution are correlated with similar deviations in the corresponding HCHO mixing ratios.

Notes: Abstract A series of 149 measurements of the HCHO mixing ratio were made between 0 and 10 km altitude and 70° N to 60° S latitude during TROPOZ II. The data show a vertical decrease of the HCHO mixing ratio with altitude at all latitudes and a broad latitudinal maximum in the HCHO mixing ratio between 30° N and 30° S at all altitudes. The measured mixing ratios of HCHO are considerably higher than those expected from CH4 oxidation alone, but agree broadly with the average latitude by altitude distribution of HCHO derived by a 2D model including emissions of C1–C7 hydrocarbons. A number of the regional scale deviations of the measured HCHO distribution from the average modelled one can be explained in terms of the local wind field.

Notes: The helical twisting power (HTP) of a chiral guest in a chiral or achiral mesophase as host system is a chirality observation and, therefore, should be a suitable quantity for determination of the absolute configuration. Rules correlating the sign of the HTP and the absolute configuration of the guest are not known or, as sometimes proposed, do not exist at all. The sign and size of the HTP of compounds with one or more chiral centers are determined by the effects of an intramolecular and an intermolecular chirality transfer. The intramolecular chirality transfer is a well known phenomena in the development of sector or helicity rules for circular dichroism spectroscopy. Due to the strong omisotrophy of the intermolecular chirality transfer in a liquid crystal phase the development of rules for the determination of the absolute configuration from the sign of the HTP is called in question. By analysis of the HTP and the circular dichroism (CD) of mono- and bis-aminoanthraquinones we now show that the development of rules in comparison to CD measurements does seem to be possible if some specialities of the anisotropic mesophases are taken into account. Notes: Abstract Nitric oxide (NO) is generated intracellularly from L-arginine by the action of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). The present investigation demonstrates immunoreactivity against NOS and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-diaphorase activity in nerve cells and fibers of the reproductive system of the female mouse. The density of nerve fibers staining for NOS varied among different genital organs. The ovary and Fallopian tube were devoid of NOS-positive nerves. The uterine horns received sparse innervation by NOS-containing nerve fibers. The most abundant NOergic innervation was found in the uterine cervix and vagina, where the nerve fibers ran parallel to the smooth muscle bundles and beneath the epithelium; they also accompanied intramural blood vessels. The vaginal muscular wall contained single or groups of NOS-reactive nerve cells. Clusters of NOS-containing neurons were located in Frankenhäuser's ganglion at the cervico-vaginal junction. NO may therefore act as a transmitter in the nervous control of the female reproductive tract.

Notes: Abstract. Neuronal nitric oxide synthase was located in various organs of the goldfish by NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Positive cells were detected throughout the digestive tract. A particularly dense plexus of nitric-oxide-synthase-containing fibers was present at the opening of the pneumatic duct into the esophagus and at the intestinal sphincter separating the esophagus and the intestinal bulb. The nitroxergic innervation was mainly confined to the muscularis. The muscular layer of the swim bladder and of the pneumatic duct was densely equipped with stained neurons and fibers. In the heart, the majority of small neurons located at the sinu-atrial junction was found to be positive for nitric oxide synthase. The muscularis of the urinary duct was supplied by fibers originating from many intramural ganglia harboring intensely stained neurons. These results suggest that nitric oxide represents a widespread transmitter in the peripheral nervous system of teleost species.
