Summary Unfertilized and NPK-fertilized plots in the long term fertility trial at Los Baños, Philippines were used to observe the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on heterotrophic N2-fixing activities in plow layer soil and in association with wetland rice. The activities were measured in the field byin situ acetylene reduction assays. Acetylene reduction activity of the plow layer soil in the paddy field was measured by soil cores. No appreciable difference was found-between fertilized and unfertilized plots.
