Notes: Summary The basic retention behaviors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with various novel alkyl diphenyl bonded phases have been examined using microcolumn liquid chromatography The retention behaviors of PAHs with these phases have been compared to those with n-alkyl bonded phases which have the same carbon numbers but methyl side groups instead of phenyl groups. Three different alkyl chain lengths for bothn-alkyl dimenthyl andn-alkyl diphenyl bonded phases such as C4, C8 and C 18 were used in this study. It was found that thesen-alkyl diphenyl phases have a non-planarity recognition capability for small and medium PAHs. It appears that this capability increases as the alkyl chain length of the bonded phases decreases. The short or medium alkyl chain length diphenyl bonded phases retained non-planar solutes better than the planar solutes. This trend is completely opposite to that with dimethyl analogs. This unique retention behavior is believed to be caused by strong molecular-molecular interaction between non-planar solutes and the two phenyl groups in those diphenyl stationary phases.

Notes: Summary An ICP detector is described which is compatible with microcolumn liquid chromatography. The total column effluent is concentrically nebulized and aspirated into a plasma flame. The carbon compounds are selectively detected by monitoring the characteristic emission line at 247.9 nm using water or aqueous solutions as the mobile phase. The detection limit for carbon is 500 ng or less, and the response is linear over at least two decades. The potential of this system is illustrated by a few applications.

Notes: Summary The analytical potential of coarse-particles (dρ=20μm) of preparative-grade, bonded β-cyclodextrin packing material (CD) was investigated by applying them as the stationary phase for liquid chromatographic (LC) and supercritical fluid chromatographic (SFC) microcolumns. A comparative study of the retention behaviour of a number of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and alkylbenzenes in LC and SFC modes was studied with the CD column. The selectivity of the CD column in different chromatographic modes was also investigated. For a number of selected PAH pairs, the experimentally obtained selectivity data with the CD column was compared with those from octadecylsilica (ODS) columns in the literature. The CD column showed unique selectivity both in normal-phase and reversed-phase LC, as well as in SFC. The observed peculiarities of solute retention in the various chromatographic modes is explained based on the structural characteristics of the CD molecule and the solutes. Effective separation of a good number of isomeric compounds belonging to different chemical classes was realized both in LC and SFC modes.

    Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology
Notes: Summary The retention behavior of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in reversed-phase microcolumn liquid chromatography has been found to depend primarily on the inherent planarity of the molecules, the degree of orderliness of the bonded phase, and the concentration of solvent. The planarity recognition capability of cholesteryl 10-undecenoate bonded phase for large PAH is comparable with that of monomeric ODS phases. During solvation, however, the phase characteristics seemed to suggest a fairly rigid structure (an ordered phase), i.e. increased selectivity for non-planar molecules which approaches that of polymeric ODS rather than that of other phases with similarly bulky groups, e.g. naphthylethyl and pyrenylethyl bonded phases.
