Notes: Summary The p24 family of small transmembrane proteins was discovered recently in yeast and mammalian cells, and some of its members have been implicated in biosynthetic protein transport. The p24 proteins are proposed to act on transport vesicles as receptors for coat and/or cargo, but their precise function(s) remain controversial. Here, we describe this protein family, and we review the available experimental data concerning their localization and function. Finally, we hypothesize about a possible role of p24 proteins in organelle morphogenesis.
