Description: The presence of green mussels (Perna viridis) has been reported from 2005 in Cienfuegos bay, Cuba. This study was made to determine the microbiological quality of the specimens that inhabit in the two areas of Cienfuegos bay in which this specie is more abundant in dry and rain periods. The microbiological quality of the water of the studied areas, doesn’t allow using them as production areas of P. viridissince they are very contaminated by Escherichia coli and total and fecal coliforms. Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae and Staphyllococcus aureus coagulasa+ were not detected in mussels and the aerobic mesophilic counts were low (1,7 x 10 2 ; 2,1 x 10 3 ; 1,4 x 10 3 ; 2,2 x 10 2 ; 3,3 x 10 2 and 2,6 x 10 2 in 2010 and 5,4 x 10; 5,1 x 10 3 ; 2,0 x 10 3 and 3,2 x 10 2 in 2011), but they were contaminated by Escherichia coli and fecal coliformes (360; 280; 230 and 40 in 2010 and 70; 90; 680 and 〈 18 in 2011), with highly values in September 2010 (1 500 and 4 600), when we found a strain of Salmonella choleraesuis that didn’t appear in the rest of the study. The microbiological quality of the studied specimens, doesn’t allow its commercialization in a fresh way, without any treatment.
