Notes:
Summary An analytical procedure for the determination of lead in the ppm range and for that of thallium in the ppb range in biological samples by mass spectrometric isotope dilution analysis is described. The decomposition of the samples is carried out in a closed glass apparatus by a mixture of HNO3 and H2O2. Lead is separated by ion-exchange chromatography with a strongly basic anion-exchanger resin, thallium by electrolytic deposition. The isotope ratios are measured by thermal ionization mass spectrometry using the silicagel technique. In samples of different plants the lead content has been determined to be within the range from 20–70 ppm with relative standard deviations of 0.6–4.5%, in plant samples and one milk powder sample the thallium content to be within the range from 8–250 ppb with relative standard deviations of 4.7–16%.
