Description:
In the previous years extensive investigations werecarried out concerning the reproduction biology of codin the Baltic Sea. The analyses showed that the yearclass strength of the eastern Baltic cod stock is decisivelydetermined by the bad oxygen conditions duringthe spawning season in the summer and by spratas predator of the cod eggs. In the western Baltic Seathese factors have no importance. The year classes aremainly determined by the strong variations of the portionsof female cods, which participated in the spawningactivities in the region. The individuals within thelength range from 35 cm to 45 cm have a special importanceat this time, caused by the actual age structureof the cod stock.
