Description: An acoustical method was investigated for obtaining meteorological soundings based on the refraction due to the vertical variation of wind and temperature. The method has the potential of yielding horizontally averaged measurements of the vertical variation of wind and temperature up to heights of a few kilometers; the averaging takes place over a radius of 10 to 15 km. An outline of the basic concepts and some of the results obtained with the method are presented.
