    Notes: Abstract The isotope shift and hyperfine structure in a rhenium hollow cathode discharge was studied for transitions of the type 5d 56s7s → 5d 56s6p and 5d 56s6d → 5d 56s6p through Doppler-free saturation absorption laserspectroscopy and high resolution interferometry. Taking configuration mixing in the lower levels of 5d 56s6p under consideration, we obtain average configuration isotope shift values for 5d 56s7s of −1760(100) MHz and for 5d 56s6d of −1970(200) MHz. These experimental values compare extremely well with the theoretically predicted configuration isotope shifts in rhenium, based on pseudo-relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations, of −1710 MHz and −1940 MHz, resp. In addition hyperfine structure constants for rhenium levels of 5d 56s6d are reported here for the first time.

    Notes: Abstract The fine structure (fs) and hyperfine structure (hfs) level scheme of Am I is reanalysed using a semi empirical fitting procedure which incorporates experimental data. Especially new laserspectroscopic measurements of the hfs of some electronic transitions in the Am atom enables us to make a more detailed analysis of 5f 7 7s 7p fine structure in Am I. In particular a relation is given between theB-factor values and the value of the nuclear electric quadrupole moment of241Am independent of a calibration by results of nuclear spectroscopy.

    Description: Microbiological techniques are under study with a view to the identification of viable microorganisms in liquid cultures, improve the identification of stressed organisms, and determine the biocidal activity of iodine and other chemicals on isolates from recycled water. A quality-assurance program has been implemented to validate data employed in making decisions concerning engineering and human health and safety. Analytical laboratory refinements will strongly aid the development of environmental control and life-support systems.

    Description: An implantable electrode assembly consisting of collagen and metallic electrodes was constructed to measure simultaneously neural signals from the intact nerve and bioelectrical noises in awake animals. Mechanical artifacts, due to bodily movement, were negligibly small. The impedance of the collagen electrodes, measured in awake cats 6-7 days after implantation surgery, ranged from 39.8-11.5 k ohms at a frequency range of 20-5 kHz. Aortic nerve activity and renal nerve activity, measured in awake conditions using the collagen electrode, showed grouped activity synchronous with the cardiac cycle. Results indicate that most of the renal nerve activity was from postganglionic sympathetic fibers and was inhibited by the baroceptor reflex in the same cardiac cycle.

    Description: NASA/MSFC is developing a physical/chemical treatment system to reclaim wastewater for reuse on Space Station Freedom (SSF). Integrated testing of hygiene and potable water subsystems assessed the capability to reclaim water to SSF specifications. The test was conducted from May through July 1990 with a total of 47 days of system test operation. Water samples were analyzed using standard cultural methods employing membrane filtration and spread plate techniques and epifluorescence microscopy. Fatty acid methyl ester and biochemical profiles were used for microbial identification. Analysis of waste and product water produced by the subsystems demonstrated the effective reduction of viable microbial populations greater than 8.0E + 06 colony forming units (CFU) per 100 mL to an average of 5 CFU/100 mL prior to distribution into storage tanks.
