    Notes: Summary In vitro pollen germination of cultivated tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., is inhibited by an ambient temperature of 5°C, more so than pollen from a Peruvian ecotype of Lycopersicon hirsutum Humb. & Bonpl. originating from an altitude of 3200 m. The frequency of L. hirsutum gametes contributing to hybrid zygote formation is more than doubled when controlled fertilizations with pollen mixtures of the two species occurs at 12/6°C as compared to crosses with the same mixtures at 24/19°C. The results suggest that differential selection at the gametophytic level occurs in response to low temperature regimes. To our knowledge this is the first time in higher plants that alteration of an environmental factor has been demonstrated to change selection values of male gametophytes in a fashion predicted by the ecology of the parental sporophytes.

    Notes: Abstract Tomato (C3-plants) and maize (C4-plants) were grown in a nutrient solution to which triacontanol was added twice a week. After about 4 weeks the triacontanol treatment caused a significant increase in the dry weight of the tomato plants. Leaf area and dry weight measurements of tomato leaves at different stages of development showed that the largest increase in growth was obtained when triacontanol treatment was initiated before bud formation. In maize, no effect of the triacontanol treatment on dry wieght was observed. Photosynthesis was inhibited by 27% in young leaves from triacontanol-treated tomato plants and 39% in the controls, when the oxygen concentration was raised from 2% to 21%. In maize no change in photosynthesis could be observed, neither after altered oxygen concentration nor after triacontanol treatment. The difference in the response of C3- and C4-plants to triacontanol indicates that it regulates processes related to photosynthesis.

    Notes: Summary The extent of correlation was estimated between isozyme genotypes and the four widely segregating characters — leaf segment W/L ratio, stigma exsertion, fruit weight, and seed weight — in the first backcross of F1 Lycopersicon esculentum x Solanum pennellii to the former parent. The inbred parents differ in their alleles at the 12 tested isozymic loci, which are known to mark a minimum of eight of the twelve tomato chromosomes. Based on the isozyme data, a mean heterozygosity value, ¯H, was calculated which estimates the proportion of pennillii alleles in each individual. Correlations between mean heterozygosity and observed levels of each quantitative trait were highly significant and positive or negative as expected from the relative parental values. Plants with the lowest mean heterozygosity — i.e., closest to the esculentum zymotype also had mean values closest to those of this parent amongst the whole backcross population for each of the quantitative traits. Bivariate and multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the ability of isozymes vs diagnostic morphological characters to estimate the portion of recurrent parent genes carried in each backcross individual. The results suggest that isozyme data gives better estimates than single diagnostic morphological characters and approach the level obtained by combinations of three morphological traits. Since electrophoretic determinations are made on small seedlings, selection at that stage can effect great savings of space and effort by greatly deminishing the size of the population needed at maturity. As such, isozyme selection would precede morphological selection but not replace it, thus the predictive value of these biochemical markers as well as diagnostic morphological characters could be obtained.

    Notes: Abstract Subjecting tomato seedlings to anaerobic conditions results in expression of a previously undescribed Adh gene, Adh-2. Induction profiles were similar for all tissues, including roots, hypocotyls, cotyledons, and true leaves. In sharp contrast to ADH-1, ADH-2 showed no induction under anaerobic stress. The only time ADH-2 activity was expressed (under noninduced conditions) was during the early stages of embryogenesis. By late embryogenesis, ADH-2 activity approached a zero level, concomitant with a sharp rise in ADH-1 activity, which is found in the cotyledons of quiescent embryo. Despite striking differences in the regulation of these two genes, their homology is demonstrated in the ability of their enzyme subunits to form presumed intergenic heterodimers, which are visible during the transient period of embryogenesis when the polypeptides encoded by both genes are expressed. A multiple point linkage test using isozymic marker genes places the Adh-2 locus on chromosome 6 near Aps-1, whereas Adh-1 resides on chromosome 4.

    Notes: Abstract Genetic variation—primarily in 19 genetic loci of seven enzyme systems—was analyzed in accessions from various parts of the geographic range ofSolanum pennellii, which according to all tested biosystematic criteria behaves like a species ofLycopersicon. In comparison with the largely sympatricL. hirsutum andL. pimpinellifolium, this species exhibits the same trends of reduced allogamy and decreased genetic variation toward the north and south margins of its distribution, though to a much lesser degree; it does not exhibit their trends toward smaller flower size in the same peripheral regions. All three species agree to a considerable extent in the ranking of their tested loci in respect to degree of variablility; however, overall polymorphy is highest inS. pennellii. Except for the appearance of self-compatibility at its southernmost margin,S. pennellii is exclusively and rigidly self-incompatible. Alleles are distributed much more uniformly over the range than in the previously mentioned species, marginal and internal endemic mutants being much less abundant. A marked geographic disagreement is evident in regions of high and low variation. These differences in patterns of genetic variability are reconciled in terms of observed differences in mating systems, probable age of distributions, and adaptive strategies.
