Description: The very high energy (VHE; E great than 100 GeV) blazar Markarian 501 was observed between April 17 and May 5 (MJD 5493854956), 2009, as part of an extensive multi-wavelength campaign from radio to VHE. Strong VHE -ray activity was detected on May 1st with Whipple and VERITAS, when the flux (E greater than 400 GeV) increased to 10 times the pre-flare baseline flux (3.9 x 10(exp -11 ph cm(exp -2 S(exp -1), reaching five times the flux of the Crab Nebula. This coincided with a decrease in the optical polarization and a rotation of the polarization angle by 15deg. This VHE flare showed a fast flux variation with an increase of a factor approximately 4 in 25 min, and a falling time of approximately 50 min. We present the observations of the quiescent state previous to the flare and of the high state after the flare, focusing on the flux and spectral variability from Whipple, VERITAS, Fermi-LAT, RXTE, and Swift combined with optical and radio data.

Notes: Studies were made of the influence of hydrostatic pressure on the helix-coil transitions of poly (A + U) and poly (A + 2U). The results were analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment which emphasized the cooperative aspect of the transitions. The helix-to-coil volume changes were found to be small and negative indicating pressure stabilization of the coil form. The significance of the results with respect to other denaturation measurements was discussed.

Notes: The variable-temperature proton nmr spectra of the oligoribonucleotides in the series CpApX and the series ApGpX, X = A, G, C, U, together with the parent dimers CpA and ApG have been measured. A complete analysis of all the nonexchangeable base proton resonances and ribose H-1′ proton resonances was made. The presence of trends in the shielding abilities of the various bases at both the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor positions were identified. The observed shieldings could be used to predict the chemical shifts of protons in related systems. Based on the empirical results from ribodinucleoside monophosphates, the temperature-dependent behavior of the J1′2′ coupling constants of the triribonucleotides suggested that the compounds in the CpApX series stacked from the 5′-end to the 3′-end, while those in the ApGpX series stacked from the 3′-end to the 5′-end.

Notes: Solutions of calf thymus DNA have been degraded in the presence of vibrating air bubbles in ultrasonic fields of low power which would not normally induce ultrasonic cavitation. The DNA was degraded to a limiting intrinsic viscosity, after which further irradiation by ultrasound had little or no effect. This limiting intrinsic viscosity decreased with increase in the ultrasonic intensity. Previously developed theories have-been adapted to calculate the maximum velocity gradient associated with the streaming of the solution around such vibrating air bubbles. The tensile force which is induced and which acts on the DNA has been calculated on the basis of current theories of degradation by hydrodynamic shear. These calculations indicate that the degradation of the DNA by ultrasound under conditions of “stable cavitation” is mainly the result of the shearing forces engendered in the solution around the oscillating bubbles.

Notes: Synthetic cyclic octapeptides of general structure cyclo[Glu(γOBzl)-Sar-Gly-(N-R)Gly]2 (R = n-hexyl and cyclohexyl) transport calcium ions selectively across organic phases and phospholipid membranes. We have now used proton nmr spectroscopy (360 MHz) to study the solution conformation(s) of their calcium complexes. When Ca(ClO4)2 was added to solutions of these peptides in CDCl3, nmr spectra of the resulting calcium complexes were characteristic of a single C2-symmetric conformer. From a Karplus-Bystrov analysis of vicinal coupling constants in both the peptide backbone and Glu side chain (treated as an ABCC′MX spin system), in conjuction with model-building studies, a structure was proposed in which the calcium ion is bound in an octahedral-type complex by the four (coplanar) carbonyl groups of the (all-trans) Glu-Sar and Gly-(N-R)Gly peptide bonds. Occurrence of preferred rotamers about Glu side chain Cα-Cβ bonds indicated that restricted rotation in peptide side chains arises upon calcium binding.

Notes: A systematic study of the effect of potassium hydroxide on the autoxidation of poly(propylene oxide)s with number average molecular weights, M̄n, in the range 400-3000 has been made in the range of temperature 110-140°C. For all the polymers a considerable increase in the induction time was produced by KOH in solution in the polymer, the increase being most marked for the polymer of lowest molecular weight. For the polymers of molecular weight 1000 and lower, the rate of the subsequent autoxidation was considerably reduced by the KOH, the effect being greatest for the polymer of molecular weight 400. For polymers of molecular weight 2000 and above no change in rate was observed. The effectiveness of KOH as an antioxidant is shown to depend on the concentration of terminal hydroxyl groups and is explained by the non-radical decomposition of RO-2 ions.

Notes: Copolymerization of acrylamide with allyl glycidyl ether yielded water soluble polymers containing an epoxy group; addition of a crosslinking agent, N,N′-methylenebis(acrylamide), to the copolymerization mixtures resulted in the formation of similar though water insoluble polymers. Condensation of a potent beta-adrenergic antagonist Alm—H, which contains a reactive amino group, with a polymer containing an epoxy group yeilded a pharmacologically active polymer. The polymer containing the epoxy group was also converted, by reaction with sodium thiosulfate and subsequent reduction, into a mecapto groups containing polymer which was also water soluble. The latter polymer was converted by condensation with a beta-adrenergic antagonist Alm—COCH2Br, which contains a reactive bromoacetamido group, into a pharmacologically active polymer.

Notes: Four species of iceryine coccids have been studied cytologically in connection with certain breeding experiments. These are Icerya littoralis, Icerya montserratensis, Echinicerya anomola, and Crypticerya rosae. For the three first-named species the complete chromosomal history has been established, and the evidence on the fourth, Crypticerya rosae, is sufficient to indicate that it differs in no essential respect from the others. The following résumé may, therefore, be considered to apply to all four species. The females are diploid, with a chromosome number of four, and the males are haploid, with a chromosome number of two. Oogenesis proceeds quite normally; two tetrads are formed and two maturation divisions occur in which the chromosomes are reduced to two in each female pronucleus. All eggs undergo this reduction: if the eggs are then fertilized, the diploid number is thus restored and development into females ensues; if the eggs remain unfertilized, whether in the body of a virgin or of a fertilized female, they develop parthenogenetically, with no restoration of diploidy, into haploid males. The spermatogenesis of the haploid males involves a single meiotic division, demonstrably equational in character; the accompanying cytoplasmic division is suppressed, and from each of the binucleate spermatids thus produced two spermatozoa are formed. These conditions are contrasted with the functional hermaphroditism and haploid parthenogenesis of Icerya purchasi.
