Notes: The relative transparency of biological materials to high-frequency electromagnetic waves has encouraged the development of new systems for imaging. This report describes experiments of microwave tomography conducted on a prototype. The object to be analyzed is submerged in water and is illuminated by a plane wave. The total electric field is analyzed by a microwave camera. The recorded data are then processed numerically in order to reconstruct the image that corresponds to the distribution of equivalent currents in a defined plane of a section. Experiments have been conducted on isolated kidneys with and without perfusion. The influence of the perfusing solution temperature has also been studied. These experiments show the potential of this system, especially through the correlation between microwave images and the biological structures. They also confirm previous results concerning spatial resolution and depth of exploration. Finally, the results demonstrate the influence of temperature and support the applicability of this imaging system in non-invasive thermometry, especially for clinical hyperthermia.

Notes: [W2(η5-C5H5)2(CO)4(μ-η2:2-C2H2)] (1) and ethylene (A) react when irradiated with UV light at 253 K predominantly to [W2(η5-C5H5)2(CO)3(μ-η1:4-C4H5)(μ-H)] (3A), [W2(η5-C5H5)2(CO)4(μ-η1:3-C4H6)] (4A), and thermolabile [W2(η5-C5H5)2(CO)3(η4-C4H6)] (5A). Similarly, propene (B), 1-butene (C), and (E)-2-butene (D) yield mixtures of [W2(η5-C5H5)2(CO)3(μ-H)(μ-η1:4-1,3-dien-1-yl)] (3B, 3 C, 3D), [W2(η5-C5H5)2(CO)4(μ-η1:3-C4H5R] (4B, 4C), and [W2(η5-C5H5)2(CO)2(μ-η1:2-CO)(η4-1,3-diene) (5B, 5 C, 5D). With B and C also thermolabile [W2(η5-C5H5)2(CO)3(μ-η2:2-C2H2)(η2-C2H3R)] (2B, 2C) are formed. A by-product of the reaction of 1 with D is [W(η5-C5H5)(CO)(H){η4-(E)-C5H7CH3}], which is generated in two diastereomeric forms (6, 6′). In contrast, 1 yields no complexes with (Z)-2-butene (E) which contain ligands formed from coordinated acetylene and the olefin. From the reaction mixture only trinuclear [W3(η5-C5H5)3(CO)5(μ-η1:2-C2H3)] (7) was isolated, an alicyclic complex with a W-W single and a W-W triple bond. The crystal and molecular structures of 5D and 7 were determined by X-ray structure analysis. The constitutions of the other complexes were ascertained by IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy.

Notes: ---Prochiral 1,3-dihydroxyacetone forms racemic oxazolidine- and oxazoline-type spiro[4.4]nonanes upon reactions with potassium (thio)cyanate and cyanamide. In contrast, 1,3-diaminoacetone yields only the corresponding spiro-bisimidazolidinethione under similar conditions together with monocyclic by-products, but the spiro-bisimidazolidinone is accessible by reaction of 1,3-dichloroacetone with urea. The resolution of the racemic spiro-bisoxazolidinethione 2a was achieved by using brucine as the resolving agent.

Notes: To study the relatively late intracellular signals involved in the proliferative response of B lymphocytes to antibodies specific for surface membrane immuno-globulins, extracts from antibody activated cells were mixed with Xenopus laevis splenic nuclei, and the incorporation of thymidine 5′-triphosphate into DNA was assessed. The slight incorporation observed with either nuclei or extract alone was markedly enhanced upon mixing the two entities when the extract was derived from cells cultured with but not without anti-receptor antibody. The appearance of active extract correlated well with the culture requirements necessary for the induction of B lymphocyte proliferation and, as revealed by time course studies, the active component arises relatively late in the activation process. Moreover, the appearance of active extracts is independent of DNA synthesis but is dependent on protein synthesis as judged from studies with metabolic inhibitors. Appropriate homogenization of activated cells yielded nuclei and cytoplasm with 85% of the activity confined to nuclei. In addition, purified active extracts exhibited DNA binding although the active component was readily distinguishable from polymerase α by chromatographic techniques. It is tentatively concluded that the active component represents either some replication protein other than polymerase or some earlier signal necessary to induce the formation or utilization of replicating proteins.

Notes: The gross morphology, histology and ultrastructure of the canary's incubation patch and the ventral apterium from which it arises are described. The apterium is vascularized by pectoral, external mammary, incubation, and prepubic arteries. It is innervated by cutaneous branches of spinal nerves. It has a surface area of 6 cm2.Its epidermis is a stratified squamous epithelium with basal, intermediate, transitional and cornified layers. Cells in the stratum germinativum contain a normal array of organelles, but are characterized by tonofilaments, desmosomes and interdigitating surfaces. Cellular organelles disappear in the stratum transitivum and are replaced by large vacuoles and keratohyalin bands. Nonmyelinated nerve fibers are abundant in the stratum germinativum. The dermis consists of (1) an avascular layer of dense collagen subjacent to the epidermis and containing many nonmyelinated nerves, and (2) an underlying layer of areolar connective tissue containing blood vessels, lamellar corpuscles and nerves. A layer of coarse elastic fibers, reinforced by collagen and smooth muscle, separates the dermis from subcutaneous tissue. In contrast to the ventral apterium, the incubation patch is featherless and visibly hypervascular and edematous. Its epidermis is both hypertrophic and hyperplastic. Large spaces separate cells in the stratum germinativum. The visible hypervascularity is due to hyperemia and increased number and size of blood vessels in the dermis. Visible edema is due to the accumulation of fluid interstitially. Although no histological differences exist among various regions of the ventral apterium, such differences are present in the incubation patch.
