    Description: Partition coefficients for Au, Ni, P, and Ge between solid Fe-Ni metal and sulfur-bearing metallic liquids have been measured at 7, 27 and 80 kbar. These are the only such data for Au, P, and Ge at high pressure. Comparison of the present partitioning results to those obtained at 1 bar indicate that only the 80-kbar Ge data differ significantly from the 1-bar experiments. Thus, many low-pressure partitioning experiments in the Fe-Ni-S-P system may have applicability to the greater portion of the earth's upper mantle or, alternatively, the entire mantle of Mars.

    Description: The first in situ observations of isotopically anomalous SiC are reported. The grains were found by X-ray mapping of polished sections of two chondritic meteorites, Cold Bokkeveld and Murchison. Ion microprobe measurements showed C-13 enrichments, delta C-13, from 199 to 2800 per mil, proving that the grains are indigenous. SiC grains are revealed only as isolated matrix particles, ruling out the possibility that SiC grains were brought into the solar system as inclusions in larger grains, which protected them from destruction in the solar nebula. Several of the SiC grains are cracked, suggesting that the etching treatment may result in size distributions biased toward smaller grains.

    Description: High-signal-to-noise-ratio observations of the Pluto-Charon system at 25, 60, and 100 microns using IRAS are combined with visual-magnitude and mutual-eclipse constraints to evaluate thermal models of Pluto and Charon. These models are consistent with eclipse observation by Dunbar and Tedesco (1986) but not with Reinsch and Pakull (1987). The most likely model for Charon is the standard asteroid model, typical for the icy Galilean and Saturnian satellites. Charon models with a significant atmosphere can be ruled out. Based on currently available radius and albedo constraints, no significant numerical distinction is possible between Pluto models ranging from isothermal spheres with surface emissivity between 0.4 and 0.9. Concerns regarding the viability of an emissivity as low as 0.4 favor the higher-emissivity models. The globally uniform surface temperature of Pluto may thus at present be as low as 45 K, with a methane column abundance of 6.7 cm atm. The most likely models are centered on radii of 1180 and 747 km and albedos of 0.47 and 0.26 for Pluto and Charon, respectively.

    Description: Spacecraft images revealed that extremely long lava flows (more than 200 km long) exist on the surface of Mars and Io. Compared to terrestial volcanic eruptions, the occurrence of these long flows is very unusual, and may hint at a different style of either magma production or eruption. Attempts to model the emplacement of the long flows on other planets, using a Bingham rheological model, were only partially successful. The objective is to conduct field measurements on long lava flows in Hawaii (where individual flows such as those of 1859 and 1881 exceed 40 km in length) in order to document and interpret their flow characteristics. In this way, a better understanding of the formation of long lava flows is sought as well as a determination of whether the Mauna Loa flows are terrestrial analogs to the long flows seen on Mars and Io.

    Description: A three-dimensional code for a rapidly rotating magnetosphere in which the MHD equations and the Maxwell equations were solved by using the two step Lax Endroff scheme, was developed. Preliminary results were presented at the Fall AGU meeting in San Francisco. The basic simulation model to study the solar wind interactions was adapted to other bodies in addition to Jupiter. Because of the recent comet flybys, a comet was chosen as the first model. The aim was to model the formation of the contact surface and the plasma tail. Later, work was begun on a three-dimensional model which would include the effects of mass loading. This model was designed to study the weak cometary bow shocks observed by the probes to comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner. The model was successful in reproducing the position and shape of the bow shock which was determined by using observations from the Suisei spacecraft.

    Description: Recent evidence indicates that magnetic reconnection at the earth's magnetopause may not be a steady process, but rather it is frequently impulsive and limited in spatial extent. These limited reconnection events are called flux transfer events (FTE's). A search has been conducted regarding the magnetic field observations at Jupiter from Pioneer 10 and 11 and Voyager 1 and 2 for evidence of FTE's and 14 possible events were found. The FTE's at Jupiter are associated with northward magnetosheath fields. The electric fields generated by Jovian FTE's are small in comparison with the corotation E field throughout much of the magnetosphere. Thus FTE's are probably not an important source of flow within the Jovian magnetosphere.

    Description: The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) program will produce an extremely sensitive all-sky survey over the wavelength region 8 to 120 microns when the mission is flown in 1982. These data will provide a novel opportunity to detect planetary-sized objects having masses smaller than 0.08 solar masses in or near the solar system. The improved detection limit of the IRAS will greatly increase the volume of space searched for such objects, as compared with previous optical and infrared studies.

    Description: The ionospheric plasma density on magnetic field lines threading the Jovian rings which are located inside approximately 1.8 Jupiter radii on the jovigraphic equatorial plane is calculated by using a rotating ion exosphere model. It is found that the bulk of the ionospheric particles on these field lines are on ballistic trajectories. On field lines approximately symmetric with respect to the jovigraphic equator, the ring, which to a first approximation would absorb the population of trapped particles, consequently has little effect. On field lines which are made asymmetric by the higher-order multipoles of Jupiter's field and the tilt of the dipole axis, the rings may have a significant effect. It is suggested that better definition of the rings' atmospheric and ionospheric properties is required to model these localized effects. If the rings are found to be an important plasma source for the inner magnetosphere, the present exospheric model will have to be revised.

    Description: The interaction of Io with its plasma torus and the Jovian magnetic field is described and examined in the context of several currently popular models. Three specific matters are addressed. First, features implied by sub-Alfvenic flow which must be common to all models are discussed. Next, the magnetic signature observed near Io by the Goddard Space Flight Center Voyager 1 magnetometer is examined and it is pointed out that the preliminary estimate of 5,000,000 A current may be an overestimate. Good fits are obtained with alternative current distributions which yield currents as small as 700,000 A through Io. The best fits are obtained for an Alfven Mach number of 0.15, but good fits are also found for Alfven Mach numbers between 0.1 and 0.25. Lastly, the crucial role of charged particle data for probing the near Io interaction is pointed out. Published data from the low energy charged particle (LECP) detector are made to suggest that Io has an intrinsic magnetic field of magnitude comparable with earlier estimates. Predictions are made which can test this picture as further data become available.
