    Description: In early 1994, the US will once again place a spacecraft in lunar orbit. Popularly called Clementine, this spacecraft will spend about two months mapping the Moon and then will travel on to encounter the near-Earth asteroid, 1620 Geographos. A brief description of the historical development of the mission; the lunar survey; Clementine's payload, equipment, and capabilties; and the encounter with Geographos is presented.

    Description: Pioneer Venus Orbiter ultraviolet spectrometer data from 20 orbits which span 3 years have been analyzed to determine the atomic hydrogen number density and vertical flux at the exobase as a function of solar zenith angle, F(10.7) index, and spacecraft latitude. From 1979 through 1981, the exobase number density n(c) and flux phi(c) are remarkably constant at n(c) = 6.0 + or - 1.5 x 10 to the 4th/cu cm and phi(e) = 7.5 + or - 1.5 x 10 to the 7th/sq cm per s in the subsolar region. The integrated vertical column density above 110 km is 3.6 + or - 1 x 10 to the 13th/sq cm. An empirical relationship is determined between the line center solar flux at H Lyman alpha, piF(0), and the F(10.7) index.

    Description: Triton, the only large moon in the solar system with a retrograde motion, is investigated. The moon rotates about Neptune every 5.88 days and its annual cycle lasts 165 years. The orbit of Triton is 355,000 km from Neptune and it is inclined 23 deg relative to Neptune's equator. The precession of its orbital plane causes complications in its seasonal progression. Triton has a radius of 1353 km and a density of 2.07 gm/cu cm. Triton is believed to have a core of rock surrounded by water ice and a surface veneer of methane and nitrogen ice. The bright haze in its atmosphere could be small grains of particulates. Triton's surface features suggest that the moon should have remained molten until about 1 billion years ago. In order to explain the active geyser-like plumes observed near the subsolar latitude of about 50 deg south, various mechanisms are suggested including explosive escape of nitrogen gas, surface winds, and buoyancy of warmer gas. Voyager 2, which left Neptune and Triton in August 1989 and is now moving out of the solar system, is expected to provide the first glimpses of interstellar material.

    Description: The spectral properties (0.35-2.20 microns) of submicron powders of hematite, maghemite, magnetite, goethite, and lepidocrocite are determined. Other physicochemical data are obtained for the powders in order to determine if deviations from stoichiometry occur due to their small particle size, to determine their state of chemical and phase purity, and to determine the physical characteristics of the individual powders. The physicochemical data obtained include mean particle diameter, discrete particle shape, chemical composition, crystallographic phase, magnetic parameters, and Moessbauer parameters. The positions of the spectral features for the hematite, maghemite, and magnetite powders are independent of temperature over the interval between about +20 and -110 C. For the goethite and lepidocrocite powders, a small shift of about 0.02 micron to shorter wavelengths is observed for some of the features after cooling to about -110 C. The spectral properties of the iron oxides and oxyhydroxides are important not only for understanding the basic physics and chemistry of the compounds but also for applications such as the remote sensing of the earth and Mars.

    Description: The Workshop on the Concept of a Common Lunar Lander, which was held at the NASA Johnson Space Center on July 1 and 2, 1991, discussed potential payloads to be placed on the Moon by a common, generic, unmanned, vehicle beginning late in this decade. At this workshop, a variety of payloads were identified including a class of one-meter (and larger) optical telescopes to operate on the lunar surface. These telescopes for lunar-based astronomy are presented in an earlier section of this report. The purpose of this section is to suggest that these and other payloads for the Common Lunar Lander be used to facilitate technology development for the proposed 16-meter Aperture UV/Visible/IR Large Lunar Telescope (LLT) and a large optical aperture-synthesis instrument analogous to the Very Large Array of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

    Description: The Magellan spacecraft was placed into orbit around Venus on 10 Aug. 1990 and started radar data acquisition on 15 Sep. 1990. Since then, Magellan has completed mapping over 2.75 rotations of the planet (as of mid-July 1992). Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), altimetry, and radiometry observations have covered 84 percent of the surface during the first mission cycle from mid-Sep. 1990 through mid-May 1991. Operations in the second mission cycle from mid-May 1991 through mid-Jan. 1992 emphasized filling the larger gaps (the south polar region and a superior conjunction) from that first cycle. Planned observations in the fourth mission cycle from mid-Sep. 1992 through mid-May 1993 will emphasize high-resolution gravity observations of the equatorial regions of Venus.

    Description: Some of the main questions regarding the composition, structure, and origin of the atmosphere of Venus are posed. These questions are (1) the distribution of the constituents of the lower atmosphere, (2) cloud composition, (3) the planet's surface and interior as revealed by atmospheric data, (4) the state property profiles and their variation over the planet, (5) the reason for the high temperatures of the lower atmosphere, (6) composition and temperature profiles of the upper atmosphere and location of the homopause, (7) spatial and temporal variations in the upper atmosphere, (8) the cause of the stability of CO2 - global circulation or local turbulence, (9) influence of neutral composition on the thermal structure, (10) response of upper atmosphere to change in solar EUV and solar wind, (11) the source and destination of the atmosphere, and (12) the location of Venus's water. The main parameters to be measured which will aid in resolving these problems are enumerated.

    Description: Current knowledge of the temperature structure of the atmosphere of Venus is briefly summarized. The principal features to be explained are the high surface temperature, the small horizontal temperature contrasts near the cloud tops in the presence of strong apparent motions, and the low value of the exospheric temperature. In order to understand the role of radiative and dynamical processes in maintaining the thermal balance of the atmosphere, a great deal of additional data on the global temperature structure, solar and thermal radiation fields, structure and optical properties of the clouds, and circulation of the atmosphere are needed. The ability of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter and Multiprobe Missions to provide these data is indicated.

    Description: Selected results are presented for an analysis of Mariner 9 1304-A data from the first 100 passes. Based on a comparison of limb data, the exospheric temperature appears lower on several Mariner 9 passes than when Mariner 6 and 7 encountered the planet in 1969. Temperatures of 300 and 350 K are considered in the atmospheric modeling. At 300 K, derived values of the atomic oxygen concentration are typically between 0.5 and 1 percent of the total density at 135 km, based on fitting theoretical intensities to limb data from several passes. Structure in the limb data below 200 km suggests the possibility that approximately 0.2 kR of the observed approximately 0.8 kR near 150 km is due to dissociative excitation of CO2. There is variability in limb profiles indicating changes in the O distribution with time. The variability does not appear to follow a recognizable pattern. Interpretation of the 1304-A disc data shows a correlation in intensity with the 10.7 cm solar flux and larger O concentrations in the afternoon than in the morning. The correlation in intensity with the 10.7 cm flux is probably due largely to variation in the solar 1304-A fluxes. Selected disc data show localized and random enhancements in the intensity.
