    Description: Materials that issued from an unusual Venusian volcano produced (1) a complex domical structure about 100 km across with thick, broad flow lobes up to 41 wide, (2) an extensive sheet of thick flows, and (3) radar-bright surfaces that extend to 360-400 km from the volcano. Altimetry indicates that the relief of the domical structure is about 0.5-1.1 km. The lobes and flows have prominant regularly spaced ridges about 686-820 m apart. Thick flows with large ridge separations and broad lobes are rare on Venus. The viscosities of these flows were larger than those of most lava flows on Venus. Comparisons of the dimensions of the volcano's lobes with lava flows on earth suggest that the Venusian lavas may have large silica contents. Radar-bright surfaces around the volcano may represent the result of an explosive eruption or very thin deposits of low-viscosity lavas. Thus, the radar-bright surfaces and lavas of the volcano were derived from a magma that differentiated within the crust or mantle of Venus. The differentiation produced (1) a gas-rich low-viscosity phase, (2) high-viscosity lavas, and (3) a residual primary magma.

    Description: Results are presented on measurements of crater depths and other morphological parameters (such as central peak and terrace frequency) of fresh craters on Ganymede and Callisto, two geophysically very similar but geologically divergent large icy satellites of Jupiter. These data were used to investigate the crater mechanics on icy satellites and the intersatellite crater scaling and crustal properties. The morphological transition diameters of and complex crater depths on Ganymede and Callisto were found to be similar, indicating that the crusts of both satellites are dominated by water ice with only a minor rocky component.

    Description: Several types of volcanic units have been recognized on the icy Uranian satellites Miranda and Ariel. On Miranda, ridges characterized by crest grooves are up to 10 km wide and 500 m high. A continuous flat-topped flow band also 10 km wide and 500 m high forms the outer southern margin of Elsinore Corona, which appears to comprise coalesced flow bands and ridges. On Ariel, in addition to at least one ridge unit similar to those on Miranda, flood plains material has covered the floors of deep chasmata (grabens) and an irregular depression. Flows on both satellites are characterized by linear vent geometries and distinct topographic margins, which indicate extrusion of a relatively viscous material. The topography of the flows can be used to estimate flow viscosity or yield strength using a Bingham plastic model. Extrusion viscosity estimates, incorporating plausible volcanologically based emplacement time scales and a rigid crust correction, range from 10 MP to 1 GP (10 TP in the unlikely absence of a chilled crust). Viscosity estimates are dependent on the assumed emplacement time scale, however, and could be as high as 10 PP, if a solid-state-based time scale is assumed.

    Description: An evaluation of surface features and structures on the Galilean moon Europa is made using the available high resolution Voyager imagery, low resolution support imaging, and what understanding of ice structure and mechanical behavior science has that is applicable to the problem. A general discussion of the history of Europa studies and the fundamental global morphology is undertaken. The visible lineament and terrain patterns are described, and possible origins discussed. Observations of faulting and block rotation previously described are amplified. A comparison of Europa's structures to terrestrial sea ice and lava lake crust features is also included. Finally, an attempt is made at synthesizing a unified model for the evolution of Europa's crust is presented which is compared with models developed by others.

    Description: Arguments were made, based on geometry, for both an impact and an internal origin for the ancient, partially preserved furrow system of Ganymede. It was concluded that furrows were not concentric, but could be impact related if multiringed structures on icy satellites are initially noncircular. The geometry of the Valhalla ring structure on Callisto was examined in order to assess the circularity of an unmodified ring system. The Ganymede furrow system was remapped to make use of improvements in coordinate control. The least-squares center of curvature for all furrows in the Marius and Galileao Regio is -20.7, and 179.2 degrees. Furrows in Marius and Galileo Regio are reasonably concentric, and are much more circular than previously estimated. The perceived present nonalignment of the assumed originally concentric furrows were used to argue for large-scale lateral motion of dark terrain blocks in Ganymede's crust, presumably in association with bright terrain formation., The overall alignment of furrows as well as the inherent scatter in centers of curvature from subregions of Galileo and Marius do not support this hypothesis.

    Description: The bright southern hemisphere, comprising Uhlanga Regio, is perhaps the most poorly understood geologic province on Triton. The entire bright southern hemisphere has been described as a bright polar 'cap', implying a seasonal origin, or as a permanent geologic terrain distinct from the equatorial terrains. Also, thermal models have predicted seasonal migration of frosts and ices from the presently sun-lit south latitudes to the dark northern latitudes. The distribution of frosts and geologic history of this region must be determined observationally. We reexamine the geology of this terrain with the goal of answering these questions.

    Description: Comprehension and analysis of geologic features on any planet is enhanced manyfold by a clear perception between albedo and topography. On many of the icy satellites significant albedo contrasts due to mixtures of dark rocky and bright icy materials can be associated with topographic features. Subtle topographic features can be masked by albedo variation and under high solar illumination albedo and topography can be difficult to separate. To this end we are compiling an atlas of stereo image pairs of the outer solar system based on Voyager imaging for the investigation of various geologic problems and for general use. For the icy satellites, general perceptions of topography are usually gleaned from shape-from-shading information in the images processed by the human brain (i.e. visual inspection). With few exceptions, actual topography has been measured on a spot-by-spot basis using shadow heights or photoclinometry, or along limb profiles (where geographic context may be unavailable). Shadow heights are limited to regions within approximately 10 deg of the terminator and images with resolution better than approximately 1 km/pixel. Photoclinometric scans can be used more widely but are subject to a variety of errors, primarily uncertain assumptions of uniform scene albedo or poorly understood photometry. Stereoscopic analysis, where available, has the potential for greatly expanding topographic perception.

    Description: It has recently been proposed that cantaloupe terrain formed as a result of instability and overturn (i.e., diapirism) of Triton's crust. Morphologic evidence implicates compositional layering within Triton's crust as the driving mechanism for the overturn. Here, we review the morphologic evidence for this origin and evaluate some of the implications.

    Description: Dark halo craters on grooved terrain on Ganymede represent potential probes of the subsurface geology. These craters are surrounded by a broad, diffuse low albedo annulus, or halo and have apparently lost the bright rim and ray deposits associated with very young craters. The recognition of dark halo craters, almost all greater than 12 km in diameter, indicates that material darker and redder than grooved terrain material forms a stratigraphy horizon at about 1 km depth the present surface of grooved terrain in Uruk Sulcus. This material is most likely downdropped cratered terrain material, which only larger craters have excavated into. This is most consistent with extensional tectonic models for grooved terrain formation whereby the lithosphere is stretched and blocks of ancient cratered terrain are downdropped along bounding faults, and subsequently resurfaced by a shallow layer of relatively clean icy material. Evidence for the preservation of cratered terrain material at shallow depth beneath grooved terrain material poses great difficulties for alternative grooved and smoothed terrain formation mechanisms.
