Beschreibung: In the present paper, the average long-term effect of Saturn's satellite Mimas on the distribution of trapped radiation (macrosignature) is examined, along with a microsignature of satellite absorption, specifically, a brief dip in charged particle intensities observed on the inbound pass of Pioneer 11 as it passed through the orbital range of Mimas. It is hypothesized that it is indeed the shadow of Mimas, in the sense that the observations reveal the effect of this satellite on a distribution of particles which interacted with it in the recent past and then drifted in longitude to the observational location. The hypothesis led to a characterization of the electron energy spectrum in Saturn's inner magnetosphere and to an estimate of the radial diffusion coefficient for such electrons.

Beschreibung: The paper deals with some results of continuing analysis and interpretation of energetic particle observations made onboard Pioneer 11 during its August-September 1979 encounter with Saturn. Source strength estimates and the radial dependence of the phase space density of protons of energies above 80 MeV indicate with some confidence that the cosmic-ray neutron albedo from the planets atmosphere and rings is the source of these particles.

Beschreibung: The discovery of the Saturn magnetosphere and its characterization by Pioneer 11 are reported, and findings on the planet's rings and satellites obtained by energetic charged particle measurements within the inner magnetosphere are presented. Bow shock crossings identified by the Pioneer plasma analyzer and magnetometer at distances of 24.1, 23.1 and 20.0 Saturn radii indicate the presence of a magnetosphere with physical dimensions and charged particle populations intermediate between those of the earth and Jupiter, with a scale more similar to that of the earth. Particle angular distributions on the inbound leg of the trajectory are consistent with a dipole magnetic field approximately perpendicular to the planet's equator, while on the outbound leg the distributions indicate the presence of an equatorial current sheet. Charged particle absorption features are detected at the orbits of Dione and Mimas, encompassing the orbits of Tethys and Enceladus, and at 2.534 and 2.343 Saturn radii indicating the presence of satellites of diameters greater than 170 km. Charged particle measurements also confirm the Pioneer division in the rings between 2.292 and 2.336 Saturn radii, a suspected satellite at 2.82 Saturn radii, the presence of the F ring between 2.336 and 2.371 Saturn radii and the outer radius of the A ring at 2.292 Saturn radii.

Beschreibung: A preliminary report is presented of energetic electrons and protons observed with the University of Iowa instrument on Pioneer 11. A graph shows absolute, spin-averaged unidirectional intensities of electrons and protons as a function of time during traversal of the central magnetosphere. Another graph shows the effects of the Jovian satellites Io and Amalthea on particle intensities. It is pointed out that a full analysis of satellite effects is the most promising technique for understanding the physical dynamics of the magnetosphere of Jupiter.

Beschreibung: Results are given of a study of the intensities, energy spectra, and angular distribution of energetic particles in the magnetosphere of Jupiter; the heliocentric radial gradient of the intensity of galactic cosmic rays; and the occurrence, intensity, and angular distribution of solar flare particles and their propagation through the interplanetary medium at large heliocentric distances.

Beschreibung: A model for the night-side Jovian magnetic field is derived partly on the basis of theoretical considerations and partly on the basis of the magnetic-field data obtained during the outbound leg of the path of Pioneer 10. This model can explain the observed sawtooth modulation of energetic particle fluxes in terms of closed and open field lines that cannot contain the particles. The model is applicable only to the Jovian magnetotail.

Beschreibung: Data obtained by Pioneer 10 on the properties of energetic electrons in the Jovian magnetosphere are analyzed. The basic detectors (seven miniature Geiger-Mueller tubes) are described together with the signal processor and sampling techniques. The model of Jupiter used in the data analysis is a centered dipole with a tilt of 9.5 deg toward 230 deg System III longitude. The energetic-electron observations within the inner magnetosphere are found to indicate that radial as well as pitch-angle diffusion of energetic electrons must take place very rapidly. Outbound observations within the magnetodisk (the region beyond 20 Jupiter radii) are found to indicate a spiraling of the apparent location of the longitude of the dipole tilt, while inbound data indicate a constant value for the apparent longitude of the dipole tilt out to 70 Jupiter radii.

Beschreibung: The energy spectra and angular distributions of electrons observed by Pioneer 11 as a function of radial distance in the inner magnetosphere of Saturn are reanalyzed and phase space densities are then calculated. The radial dependence of phase space density requires a distributed loss process. The loss is greatest in the region of the E ring (5.5 less than L less than 8.5) and is attributed to collisions with the ring particles in agreement with earlier work by Van Allen et al. (1980b). Quantitative analysis yields the following properties of the E ring: the particle radii are in the range of 4 x 10(exp -5) to 3.2 x 10(exp -4) cm and the thickness of the ring is approximately 3 R(sub s). Between the inner edge of the E ring (5.5 R(sub s)) and the outer edge of the A ring (2.3 R(sub s)) there are more energetic electrons than can be supplied by radial diffusion from an external source. Detailed calculations show that a cosmic ray albedo neutron decay (CRAND) source in the A and B rings is a plausible source for this excess. The radial diffusion coefficient required to explain the E ring absorption and CRAND source for electrons is 1 x 10(exp -12) greater than D(sub 0) greater than 3 x 10(exp -12) R(sub s)(exp 2)/s, assuming that D(sub LL) = D(sub 0)L(exp 3). As part of the reanalysis program, a method for the deconvolution of pitch angle distributions observed by simple detectors on a rotating spacecraft is developed. This process removes the instrumental response and rotational smear due to finite sampling periods and yields true angular distributions.
