    Description: In this paper the tectonic features of the Elysium region are identified and characterized. Identification of features was made using USGS controlled photomosaics (Elysium quadrangle, and portions of Amenthes and Cebrenia quadrangles); Viking Orbiter photographic data were used in individual cases to assist in identification. The positions and orientations of tectonic features can then be used, in conjunction with estimates of the mass of the volcanic load obtained from gravity modelling, to constrain the thickness of the elastic lithosphere in the region.

    Description: Altitude data derived from the 12.6 cm radar measurements obtained at JPL's Goldstone Facility were used to explore the utility of this type of regional analysis and to develop criteria for the interpretation of hypsometric data for planets where no visual images are available. Examination of the radar-derived hypsogram for Mars shows that the unimodal distribution of elevations contains several second order peaks and is skewed toward a modal elevation of about 3.5 km above the 6.1 mb datum. Individual topographic features can be recognized from this hypsogram, but such interpretations are based on the known surface morphology that has been determined from spacecraft images. It is not yet known how, for example, cratered terrain, regional slopes or other morphological features could be identified using the hypsogram if no images were available for ground-truth. The role that large impact craters play in influencing the shape of a hypsogram is being studied.

    Description: Geomorphic mapping revealed that the three volcanic constructs within Elysium Planitia (Hecates Tholus, elysium Mons and Albor Tholus) are very different in their overall morphology and represent three distinct types of martian volcano. Hecates Tholus was found to possess the most likely possible example of a young, explosively generated, air fall deposit, while the volume of magma erupted from Elysium Mons appears to have been orders of magnitude larger than that erupted from Albor Tholus. A primary aim of the regional geological analysis of Elysium Planitia is to further understand the volcanic and tectonic evolution of the area by the identification and interpretation of individual lava flows and their source vents. Lava flow size, spatial distribution, flow direction and the stratigraphic relationships of these lava flows to adjacent structural features were all measured. The topographic form of Elysium Mons has totally controlled the flow direction of lava flows within Elysium Planitia. Lava flows from Elysium Mons can be traced for distances of 150 to 250 km in a radial direction from the volcano. Parasitic vents located beyond the recognizable volcanic construct also conform to this radial pattern. A second unusual characteristic of the Elysium Planitia region is the high frequency of occurrence of sinuous channels that are morphologically similar to lunar sinuous rilles.

    Description: As part of the Galilean Satellites Mappers Program, the South Polar region of Io was studied. Examination of the Voyager images had led to reassessment of the possible mechanisms by which certain units were created or modified in this area. Specifically, analyses have focused on determining the relative age of the mountain material and on the process by which the layered plains material was eroded.

    Description: Energy conversion processes which are potentially important in the outer planets at pressures greater than obut 0.1 bar are reviewed. Generation of buoyancy contrasts by condensation of various constituents is discussed with emphasis on the possible significance of phase changes in substances such as Si and Mg compounds at deep levels. It is demonstrated that, in the absence of nonequilibrium thermodynamic processes, strong kinetic energy generation must accompany the transport of heat out of the high temperature planetary interiors. The possibly dominant role of lagged parahydrogen conversion in the convective transport of heat at levels where T is less than 300 K is discussed. Measurements which may ultimately contribute to a better understanding of energy conversion processes are summarized.

    Description: The temperature structure of the Uranus atmosphere is investigated on the basis of 325/cm and 225/cm Voyager 2 IRIS observations of a layer between 60 and 200 mbar (including the tropopause). The data are presented in graphs and analyzed in detail. The latitudinal variations of the temperature near the tropopause and the inferred thermal winds are shown to be in good agreement with the findings reported for lower altitudes by Hanel et al. (1986), although greater in amplitude. A linear zonally symmetric circulation model with no solar and condensation heating, a frictional damping time 1-2 times the radiative damping time, a subrotating atmosphere at low latitudes, and zonal winds decaying with altitude is proposed to account for the observed structures.

    Description: A variety of common eolian features on Mars have been identified from a survey of Mariner 9 and Viking orbiter images, and their regional and global distributions and orientations are discussed. Ten features have been mapped including: light and dark streaks, splotches, barchan and transverse dunes, crescentric and anomalous dunes, yardangs, wind grooves, and deflation pits. The north polar region shows a complex wind regime. Dunes and other ephemeral features reveal winds from the northwest and northeast. In the middle and low northern latitudes, northeasterly winds are the most effective winds. Southeast winds are the effective winds in most southern latitudes. Erosional features in bedrock indicate long-term and perhaps ancient wind trends, whereas depositional features may record relatively more recent winds. Deflation pits in the mantled terrain may contain the best record of both ancient and present-day winds.

    Description: A description is presented of the results of a nondestructive analysis conducted with a 42-g slice of the Kenna ureilite. The sample was analyzed in a gamma-gamma coincidence counting system, using a dual-parameter, 4096-channel pulse height analyzer. Data concerning Al-26 and Ne-22/Ne-21 in ureilites and Chassigny are presented in a table. A graph shows the ratio of measured Al-26 activity to that calculated from elemental production rates vs spallation Ne-22/Ne-21 for ureilites and Chassigny. The significance of the data with respect to findings reported by Wilkening et al. (1973) is discussed.

    Description: Radionuclide concentration data for six samples from two cores of the Keyes chondrite are presented. The weighted average potassium content for samples was about 675 ppm, somewhat lower than the 800-900 ppm typically found in L chondrites. Spectra were analyzed for U and Th, with upper limits established at approximately 100 and 200 ppb, respectively.

    Description: Man-made alloy spheres simulating the compositions of particles found in the lunar soil and weighting approximately 10 mg are shown to be equivalent, insofar as remanence intensity and demagnetization stability are concerned, to more than about 10 billion submicrometer spherical iron particles. The large particles not only contain large stable magnetic remanence, but when the polished surfaces of these particles are etched and carefully studied, they provide useful petrogenetic information, imply the mechanism of magnetization, the time-temperature history, and outline the format for possible paleointensity analysis. The intensity and stability of the remanence in these large spheres is related to the microstructure developed during rapid cooling.
