    Description: The thermal histories of ordinary chondrites and the canonical internal heating or onion shell models, which predict an inverse relation between the petrologic type of chondrites and the metallographic cooling rate, are reviewed. The thermal and accretional requirements of the 'metamorphosed planetesimal' model proposed by Scott and Rajan (1981) are analyzed, and an alternative model consistent with the metallographic cooling rate constraints is suggested in which ordinary chondrite parent bodies are collisionally fragmented and then rapidly reassembled before metamorphic heat has been dissipated.

    Description: A quantitative analysis of groove spacing on Ganymede is described. Fourier transforms of a large number of photometric profiles across groove sets are calculated and the resulting power spectra are examined for the position and strength of peaks representing topographic periodicities. The geographic and global statistical distribution of groove wavelengths are examined, and these data are related to models of groove tectonism. It is found that groove spacing on Ganymede shows an approximately long-normal distribution with a minimum of about 3.5 km, a maximum of about 17 km, and a mean of 8.4 km. Groove spacing tends to be quite regular within a single groove set but can vary substantially from one groove set to another within a single geographic region.

    Description: We have analyzed high-resolution Magellan Doppler tracking data over Mead crater, using both line-of-sight and spherical harmonic methods, and have found a negative gravity anomaly of about 4-5 mgal (at spacecraft altitude, 182 km). This is consistent with no isostatic compensation of the present topography; the uncertainty in the analysis allows perhaps as much as 30% compensation at shallow dpeths (approximately 25 km). This is similar to observations of large craters on Earth, which are not generally compensated, but contrasts with at least some lunar basins which are inferred to have large Moho uplifts and corresponding positive Bouguer anomalies. An uncompensated load of this size requires a lithosphere with an effective elastic lithosphere thickness greater than 30 km. In order for the crust-mantle boundary not to have participated in the deformation associated with the collapse of the transient cavity during the creation of the crater, the yield strength near the top of the mantle must have been significantly higher on Earth and Venus than on the Moon at the time of basin formation. This might be due to increased strength against frictional sliding at the higher confining pressures within the larger planets. Alternatively, the thinner crusts of Earth and Venus compared to that of the Moon may result in higher creep strength of the upper mantle at shallower depths.

    Description: A comparison of the lithospheric stress field predicted for rapid global reorientations against observed tectonic features is used to test the polar wander paths proposed for Mars by Schultz and Lutz-Garihan (1981). A calculation of the reorientation stresses leads to the suggestion that the formation of normal faults or graben in broad regions around the former rotation poles should be the minimum tectonic signature of a reorientation that generates lithospheric stresses in excess of the extensional strength of near-surface material. It is concluded that polar wander of the magnitude and timing envisioned by Schultz and Lutz-Garihan did not occur.

    Description: Cumulus clinopyroxenes in the Shergotty and Zagami meteorites suggest crystal fractionation occurred, possibly by gravitative settling. Numerical models of this process in a nonconvecting environment argue that the small phenocrysts can segregate only under extreme conditions of cooling time or gravitational field strength. Since textures indicate that cooling time was not excessive, a large (planetary) g is required by these models, in agreement with other suggestions that the shergottite parent body may be Mars. Other calculations indicate that it is extremely difficult to produce the observed textures in a convecting environment, unless crystal setting occurred in a quiescent zone at the bottom of the magma chamber.
