    Description: Observations of Uranus obtained over four years with the IUE Observatory supports the initial identification of a bright H Ly alpha flux which varies independently of the solar H Ly alpha flux, implying a largely self-excited emission. An average brightness of 1400 Rayleighs is derived, and limits for the possible contribution by reflected solar H Ly alpha emission, estimated to be about 200 Rayleighs, suggest that the remaining self-excited emission is produced by an aurora. Based on comparison with solar wind measurements obtained in the vicinity of Uranus by Voyager 2 and Pioneer 11, no evidence for correlation between the solar wind density and the H Ly alpha brightness is found. The upper limit to H2 emission gives a lower limit to the ratio of H Ly alpha/H2 emissions of about 2.4, suggesting that the precipitating particles may be significantly less energetic on Uranus than those responsible for the aurora on Jupiter. The average power in precipitating particles is estimated to be of the order of 10 to the 12th W.

    Description: Eight comets were observed with the IUE at various-heliocentric and geocentric distances. Their UV spectra are remarkably similar despite the large differences in the dust to gas ratios. Since all the dominant atomic species (except N) radicals and ions of the coma are detected in this spectral region, the total gaseous output of the nucleus can be estimated. The abundance of the carbon atom-bearing species is still not very well known and there are indications that the CO content of the coma could vary from comet to comet.

    Description: The Voyager ultraviolet stellar occultation data yield a temperature of 200 + or - 50 K at about 400 km, and the solar occultation data give 1100 + or - 200 K at 1450 km above the ammonia cloud tops. The temperature gradient between 400 and 1450 km is approximately 1 K/km. The mesospheric temperature structure gives no strong indication of an earth-like mesopause. The heating of the upper atmosphere appears to result from a combination of magnetospheric charged particle precipitation, ion drag, inertia gravity waves, and solar EUV. The volume mixing ratios of CH4 and C2H6 at 325 km are measured to be 2.5(+3, -2) x 10 to the -5th and 2.5(+2.0, -1.5) x 10 to the -6th, respectively, which are lower than in the stratosphere. The C2H2 volume mixing ratio is not greater than 5 x 10 to the -6th at 300 km. The homopause value of the equatorial eddy diffusion coefficient is found to be 1-2 x 10 to the -6th sq cm/s.

    Description: Occultation of the star Delta-Scorpii by Saturn as recorded by the Voyager Ultraviolet Spectrometer yields the value of the exospheric temperature in the equatorial region to be 800 (+150, -120) K at an altitude of 1540 km above the 1-bar atmospheric pressure level; the H2-density at 1540 km is determined to be 5 (+3.6, -1.8) x 10 to the 9th per cu cm. Temperature gradient in the thermosphere is found to be 1.25 (+0.05, -0.07) K/km. Methane volume mixing ratio at 965 km above the 1-bar pressure level is determined to be 0.00015.

    Description: The short wavelength camera of the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite was used to measure S II 1256, S III 1199, semiforbidden S III 1729, and semiforbidden S IV 1406 emission from the high-temperature region of the Io plasma torus. Observations over a period of five years (1979-1984) indicate that the Io plasma parameters have relatively small variations, particularly in the case of the mixing ratio for the dominant constituent S(++), and electron temperature. A simple three-dimensional model of the plasma torus was used to obtain the ion mixing ratios and the plasma density for each observation. The results are compared with Voyager 1 data for mixing ratio (ion density divided by electron density); ionization balance; and plasma density. The results of the comparison are discussed in detail.

    Description: A spectrum of a much higher quality than previously available has been obtained which shows emission features arising from S(+), S(++), S(+++), and an upper limit for O(++). The well-defined splitting of the 1729 A feature is seen as confirming its tentative identification as semiforbidden S III 5S2(0)-3P2,1. The lower contamination of S III 1199 A by H I 1216 A than in most previous IUE spectra of the Io torus makes possible an estimate of the S III 1729 A collision strength. The variation of these features with temperature and their possible presence in spectra of nebulae are discussed.

    Description: During the occultation of the star Regulus (B7 type) by Jupiter as seen from the Voyager 2 spacecraft on July 9, 1979, two absorbing regions were detected. Between 911 and 1200 A, H2 was absorbing over a 600 km altitude range. Above 1300 A, the rapid increase of the absorption by the hydrocarbons was observed over an altitude interval of approximately 100 km with a height resolution of 3 km. The analysis of these absorption features has provided the height profiles of molecular hydrogen, methane, ethane, and acetylene, as well as the thermal profile in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter. Combining the Voyager ultraviolet spectrometer results with other data, such as those obtained by the Voyager infrared and radioscience instruments, has yielded a comprehensive model of the composition and structure of the atmosphere of Jupiter.

    Description: It is pointed out that the intensity of the Lyman-alpha emission is a good indicator of the principal aeronomical processes on the major planets. The high-resolution ultraviolet spectrometer aboard the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory Copernicus was used in 1980 April and May to detect the Jovian Lyman-alpha emission by spectroscopically discriminating it from other Doppler shifted Lyman-alpha emissions such as those of the geocorona, and the interplanetary medium. Taking into consideration the reported emission data, it appears that an unusually large energy input due to the particle precipitation in the auroral region must have been responsible for the large observed Lyman-alpha intensity during the Voyager encounter. At most other times, the observed Jovian Lyman-alpha intensity can be explained, within the range of statistical uncertainty, by a model that takes into consideration the solar EUV flux, the solar Lyman-alpha flux, the high exospheric temperature, and the eddy diffusion coefficient without energy input from the auroral sources.

    Description: IUE spectra have shown several O I and S I emissions near Io. The optical thickness of the S I 1814 A multiplet indicates that the S column density is greater than about 2 x 10 to the 12th/sq cm. The presence of an S I 1479 A feature suggests that electron collisions with SO2 could be a major source of the emissions. It is likely that particle excitation in the denser collision-dominated part of the atmosphere is also responsible for a substantial part of the observed emissions.
