    Description: Observations of Uranus obtained over four years with the IUE Observatory supports the initial identification of a bright H Ly alpha flux which varies independently of the solar H Ly alpha flux, implying a largely self-excited emission. An average brightness of 1400 Rayleighs is derived, and limits for the possible contribution by reflected solar H Ly alpha emission, estimated to be about 200 Rayleighs, suggest that the remaining self-excited emission is produced by an aurora. Based on comparison with solar wind measurements obtained in the vicinity of Uranus by Voyager 2 and Pioneer 11, no evidence for correlation between the solar wind density and the H Ly alpha brightness is found. The upper limit to H2 emission gives a lower limit to the ratio of H Ly alpha/H2 emissions of about 2.4, suggesting that the precipitating particles may be significantly less energetic on Uranus than those responsible for the aurora on Jupiter. The average power in precipitating particles is estimated to be of the order of 10 to the 12th W.

    Description: The temperature structure of the Uranus atmosphere is investigated on the basis of 325/cm and 225/cm Voyager 2 IRIS observations of a layer between 60 and 200 mbar (including the tropopause). The data are presented in graphs and analyzed in detail. The latitudinal variations of the temperature near the tropopause and the inferred thermal winds are shown to be in good agreement with the findings reported for lower altitudes by Hanel et al. (1986), although greater in amplitude. A linear zonally symmetric circulation model with no solar and condensation heating, a frictional damping time 1-2 times the radiative damping time, a subrotating atmosphere at low latitudes, and zonal winds decaying with altitude is proposed to account for the observed structures.

    Description: Images of Neptune obtained by the narrow-angle camera of the Voyager 2 spacecraft reveal large-scale cloud features that persist for several months or longer. The features' periods of rotation about the planetary axis range from 15.8 to 18.4 hours. The atmosphere equatorward of -53 deg rotates with periods longer than the 16.05-hour period deduced from Voyager's planetary radio astronomy experiment (presumably the planet's internal rotation period). The wind speeds computed with respect to this radio period range from 20 meters per second eastward to 325 meters per second westward. Thus, the cloud-top wind speeds are roughly the same for all the planets ranging from Venus to Neptune, even though the solar energy inputs to the atmospheres vary by a factor of 1000.

    Description: The energy budgets of Titan, Uranus, and Neptune are reevaluated using new observational data on energy input as well as unpublished data on energy output. The bolometric geometric albedo of each object was determined, and preliminary determinations of the phase functions were used to compute the Bond albedos and effective temperatures. The values for the latter are 83 + or - 2 K for Titan, 57 + or - 2 K for Uranus, and 47 + or - 2 K for Neptune. The effective temperature of Titan is greater than the observed brightness temperatures in the thermal infrared region of the spectrum, indicating that the emissivity is less than unity for this part of the spectrum. An internal luminosity of (3.9 + or 1.1) x 10 to the 15th W is found for Neptune, and an upper limit of (0.6 + or - 1.4) x 10 to the 15th W is found for Uranus.

    Description: Planetary satellites, ranging in size from ring particles to the Galilean moons of Jupiter, constitute a small but diverse compmonent of the solar system. In some respects, the satellite systems of the giant planets can be thought of as miniature solar systems. The chemical and physical properties of these systems can yield clues to the conditions under which they may have formed, and thus can constrain models of the circumplanetary nebulae and the solar nebula. Planetary rings contain a great deal of structure, most strikingly displayed in Voyager spacecraft images. Understanding the causes of this structure can yield important insights into the dynamics of the protoplanetary disk. Taken together, rings and moons offer clues as to the nature of the processes which led to the formation of the planets themselves.

    Description: This paper presents a geometric model describing the geometry of the transient cavity of an impact crater and the subsequent collapse of its walls to form a crater filled by an interior breccia lens. The model is tested by comparing the volume of slump material calculated from known dimensional parameters with the volume of the breccia lens estimated on the basis of observational data. Results obtained from the model were found to be consistent with observational data, particularly in view of the highly sensitive nature of the model to input parameters.

    Description: Voyager 2 undertook radio science investigations of the Neptune and Triton masses and densities, as well as of their atmospheric and ionospheric vertical structures, the atmospheric composition and low-order gravitational harmonics of Neptune, and ring material characteristics. Upon probing the atmosphere of Neptune to a pressure level of about 500,000 Pa, the effects of a methane cloud region and of ammonia absorption below the cloud have become apparent. The tenuous neutral atmosphere of Triton produced distinct signatures in the occultation data; it is inferred that the Triton atmosphere is controlled by water-pressure equilibrium with surface ices.

    Description: Soils and regolith breccias contain clues to the geologic processes that contributed to the evolution of the local regolith over time. A suite of ten regolith breccias from the Apollo 15 site were compared with the results of previous studies in order to learn more about the regolith evolution at that site.

    Description: Previous theoretical studies predicted that in certain regions of earth orbit, the man-made earth orbiting debris environment will soon exceed the interplanetary meteoroid environment for sizes smaller than 1 cm. The surfaces returned from the repaired Solar Max Mission (SMM) by STS 41-C on April 12, 1984, offered an excellent opportunity to examine both the debris and meteoroid environments. To date, approximately 0.7 sq. met. of the thermal insulation and 0.05 sq. met of the aluminum louvers have been mapped by optical microscope for crater diameters larger than 40 microns. Craters larger in diameter than about 100 microns found on the initial 75 micron thick Kapton first sheet on the MEB (Main Electronics Box) blanket are actually holes and constitute perforations through that blanket. The following populations have been found to date in impact sites on these blankets: (1) meteoritic material; (2) thermal paint particles; (3) aluminum droplets; and (4) waste particles.

    Description: Studies of the trajectory of the Galileo mission to Jupiter recently revealed that the spacecraft can pass close to one of the largest asteroids (#29 Amphitrite). NASA has therefore altered the mission plan of the Galileo spacecraft to include a possible close flyby of Amphitrite in early December 1986, if the condition of the spacecraft allows. If this option is actually implemented, Amphitrite will become the only asteroid for which any high-spatial resolution images and reflection spectra will be available. To evaluate the value of this data and place Amphitrite in the context of the more than 600 asteroids for which some compositional information exists. Existing data was reexamined, new telescopic spectra of Amphitrite were obtained, and simulated Galileo data sets were constructed.
