Beschreibung: Requirements for and descriptions of the mission equipment, subsystems, configuration, utilities, and interfaces for an Advanced Science and Applications Space Platform (ASASP) are developed using large space structure technology. Structural requirements and attitude control system concepts are emphasized. To support the development of ASASP requirements, a mission was described that would satisfy the requirements of a representative set of payloads requiring large separation distances selected from the Science and Applications Space Platform data base. Platform subsystems are defined which support the payload requirements and a physical platform concept is developed. Structural system requirements which include utilities accommodation, interface requirements, and platform strength and stiffness requirements are developed. An attitude control system concept is also described. The resultant ASASP is analyzed and technological developments deemed necessary in the area of large space systems are recommended.

Beschreibung: Overall Space Station architecture is presented in schematic outlines and plans. How the customer and mission needs influence this design is studied. The uses, occupants, activities, interfaces, utilities, locomotion, environments, and technological costs are all factors which influence the architecture. User and system functions are profiled, interfaces are characterized and functions are grouped. These lead to packaging of functions into modules and the design of system and user accommodations.

Beschreibung: Top level requirements for assembly and integration of the Large Deployable Reflector (LDR) Observatory at the Space Station are examined. Concepts are currently under study for LDR which will provide a sequel to the Infrared Astronomy Satellite and the Space Infrared Telescope Facility. LDR will provide a spectacular capability over a very broad spectral range. The Space Station will provide an essential facility for the initial assembly and check out of LDR, as well as a necessary base for refurbishment, repair and modification. By providing a manned platform, the Space Station will remove the time constraint on assembly associated with use of the Shuttle alone. Personnel safety during necessary EVA is enhanced by the presence of the manned facility.

Beschreibung: On-orbit exchange of spacecraft modules containing experiment or subsystem hardware or consumables performed at goesynchronous altitudes with the space tug and at lower altitudes with the shuttle is described. One promising concept for such a tug-mounted spacecraft module exchange is the McDonnell Douglas Direct-Access Servicer. This servicer can also be used in low orbit, mounted on the shuttle. In this concept, push-pull injector/retractor devices are combined with a rotating indexer to provide a minimum-complexity mechanism with a high capacity for coincident exchange of many modules.

Beschreibung: A concept has been developed for providing for a permanent manned presence in space for science, applications, and technology plus growth potential to support major future operational missions. An initial crew of two to four is accommodated along with installations for interior, exterior and tended payloads. Tended payloads support includes servicing of remote free-flying spacecraft, basing of reusable orbital transfer vehicles and basing of teleoperator-mounted payloads for near-station excursions. Candidate payloads, plus configuration, flight operation, subsystem and ground logistics aspects are described, as are Shuttle interactions.

Beschreibung: Many space payloads with similar mission requirements can be grouped and accommodated on an orbiting platform which provides high-capacity, centralized services. Various concepts for such a platform were devised and evaluated to identify optimal features, interface prospects and areas of technological challenge. Guidelines included minimum and augmented mission models for science and applications payloads for the 1985-90 time period, minimum extension of the Orbiter capability, maximum use of the Orbiter remote manipulator system and capitalization on EVA where applicable. Deployable structures were employed to provide spacious payload berthing on a platform which can be highly-compacted for shuttle delivery.
