Description: High resolution spectra in the region of the 2-nu9 band of nitric acid have been obtained for selected portions of the HNO3 spectrum using tunable diode laser techniques. Continuous spectra are presented from 891.25/cm to 898.77/cm, with a spectral resolution less than or equal to 0.001/cm (30 MHz). Absolute line intensities and line positions are presented. Absolute wavelength calibration was obtained by frequency mixing the diode laser with a C(13)O2(16) isotope laser. Self and foreign gas (N2) broadening coefficients were iteratively calculated from the experimental data and were determined.

Description: Existing techniques are reviewed and novel approaches for broadband photoexcitation of lasers are discussed. This subject is of interest because of the emergence of future intense near equilibrium and blackbody sources, such as the gas core reactor, and electric discharge plasma devices, which are the key to the development of intense broadband radiation sources. The possible use of radiation from solar concentrators in space also fits into this general area. The varied use of photoexcitation of lasers are discussed ranging over direct optical pumping, photodissociation, and photoreionization. In addition, the new uses of laser transitions and chemical reactions is shown. This is accomplished through multiline operation of high pressure tunable lasers which can use the broadband radiation for multiphoton excitation.

Description: A parametric analysis of DIAL sensitivity with heterodyne detection is presented and comparisons with direct detection are discussed. Examples are given for monitoring vertical distributions of O3, H2O, and NH3 using a ground-, aircraft-, or shuttle-based pulsed tunable CO2 laser DIAL system. Results indicate that maximum sensitivity at minimum laser energy per measurement requires multiple pulse operation with the energy per pulse selected so that the measured photon rate is approximately equal to the detector IF bandwidth. Measurement sensitivities can be maximized and interference effects minimized by fine adjustment of measurement frequencies using the tunability of high pressure lasers. The use of rare isotope lasers minimizes loss due to CO2 atmospheric absorption.

Description: The key problems in the development of eye-safe solid-state lasers are discussed, taking into account the energy transfer mechanisms between the complicated energy level manifolds of the Tm, Ho, Er ion dopants in hosts with decreasing crystal fields such as YAG or YLF. Optimization of energy transfer for efficient lasing through choice of dopant concentration, power density, crystal field and temperature is addressed. The tailoring of energy transfer times to provide efficient energy extraction for short pulses used in DIAL and Doppler lidar is considered. Recent advances in Pt/SnO2 oxide catalysts and other noble metal/metal oxide combinations for CO2 lasers are discussed. Emphasis is given to the dramatic effects of small quantities of H2O vapor for increasing the activity and lifetime of Pt/SnO2 catalysts and to increased lifetime operation with rare isotope (C-12)(O-18)2 lasing mixtures.

Description: The paper presents a review of tunable vibronic solid state lasers for DIAL measurements and provides new experimental results for tunable Ti:sapphire lasers, materials development, and spectral bandwidth narrowing through injection control. Pulsed injection control of a Ti:sapphire laser with a 2.5-pm narrow band pulsed dye laser and with another Ti:sapphire laser is demonstrated with nearly complete energy extraction, indicating homogeneous line broadening. The status of tunable solid state lasers in the 1.6-2.3 micron range for DIAL measurements of trace gases, and development trends for lasers with reduced cryogenic cooling needs, are included. The effects of laser gain on optical damage, energy extraction, and amplified spontaneous emission are indicated for several tunable lasers.
