Abstract. The image glide force on an edge dislocation inside an elliptic inhomogeneity is investigated using previously-established general solutions to the plane-elasticity problems of the elastic field produced by an internal line singularity. The matrix-inhomogeneity interface is assumed either perfectly adhering or slipping. The results for the two kinds of boundary are compared by means of equiforce contour plots. It is found that for an adhering interface the force field is qualitatively insensitive to the inhomogeneity shape. On the contrary, for a slipping interface shape effects are essential, ranging from a "matrix-shielding" effect, to the appearance of new stable-equilibrium loci.
