    Description: Italian penisula is a crucial area in the Mediterranean region to understand the active deformation processes along Nubia-Eurasia plate boundary. We present the velocity and strain rate fields of the Italian area derived from continuous GPS observations of more than 300 sites in the time span 1998-2009. The GPS networks were installed and managed by different institutions and for different purposes; altogether they cover the whole country with a mean inter-site distance of about 50 km and provide a valuable source of data to map the present day kinematics of the region. The data processing is performed by BERNESE software ver. 5.0, adopting a distributed session approach, with more than 10 clusters, sharing common stations, each of them consisting of about 40 stations. Daily loosely constrained solutions are routinely produced for each cluster and then combined into a network daily loose solution. Subsequently daily solutions are transformed on the chosen reference frame and the constrained time series are fitted using the complete covariance matrix, simultaneously estimating site velocities together with annual signals and sporadic offsets at epochs of instrumental changes. In this work we provide an updated detailed picture of the horizontal and vertical kinematics (velocity maps) and deformation pattern (strain rate maps) of the Italian area. The results show several crustal domains characterized by different velocity rates and styles of deformation.

    Description: The recent development and establishment of GNSS networks in Italy make it possible to define an increasingly detailed spatial and temporal resolution of the ongoing crustal deformation and to visualize the complex interplay between different orogens in the Africa-Eurasia collision zone. We analyzed all the available GPS raw data in the time span 1998-2013 and constructed time series of GNSS stations referenced to a common reference frame and finally produced the tectonic velocity field providing an updated detailed picture of the kinematics (velocity map) and deformation pattern (strain rate map) of the Italian area.

    Description: We present the velocity field of Italy derived from the analysis of continuous GPS observations collected during 1998-2009 from 287 sites. The GPS networks analyzed cover the whole country with a mean inter-site distance of about 50 km. The processing is performed using two software programs, BERNESE and GAMIT, adopting in both cases a distributed session approach with more than 10 clusters, sharing common stations, each of them consisting of about 40 stations. Daily loosely constrained solutions (saved as SINEX files) are routinely produced for each cluster by two data analysis centres and the velocity field is obtained by stacking the daily normal equations. The rigorous combination of independent solutions allows the cross-validation of the velocity field. We have analyzed the time series of the entire area referenced to a common frame (ITRF2005 with respect to Eurasian Plate) and have estimated the velocity field providing an updated detailed picture of the kinematics (velocity map) and deformation pattern (strain rate map) of the Italian area. Additionally, we have combined the two velocity fields obtained from the two software programs obtaining the average velocity field of the Italian area. The two velocity fields agree at the level of 0.2-0.3 mm/yr consistent with their standard deviations. The deformation patterns (strain-rates) do have significant features, showing a distinctive extension along the Apennines on the order of 50-80 10-9 yr-1 and less pronounced areas of compressive tectonic behaviour at the level of 30-50 10-9 yr-1. The GPS kinematic description of the crustal deformation shows a high coherence with the seismotectonic setting of the Italian area.

    Description: Earthquakes deliver in few seconds the elastic energy accumulated in hundreds of years. Where and when will be the next earthquake remains a difficult task due to the chaotic behaviour of seismicity and the present lack of available tools to measure the threshold of the crustal strength. However, the analysis of the background strain rate in Italy and the comparison with seismicity shows that larger earthquakes occur with higher probability in areas of lower strain rate. We present a statistical study in which a relationship linking the earthquake size (magnitude) and the total strain rate (SR) is found. We combine the information provided by the Gutenberg–Richter law (GR) of earthquake occurrence and the probability density distribution of SR in the Italian area. Following a Bayesian approach, we found a simple family of exponential decrease curves describing the probability that an event of a given size occurs within a given class of SR. This approach relies on the evidence that elastic energy accumulates in those areas where faults are locked and the SR is lower. Therefore, in tectonically active areas, SR lows are more prone to release larger amount of energy with respect to adjacent zones characterised by higher strain rates. The SR map of Italy, compared with 5 years seismicity supports this result and may become a powerful tool for identifying the areas more prone to the next earthquakes.
