Notes: Abstract Optimization-simulation models were used for the systems analysis of a water resources system. The Karjan Irrigation reservoir project in India was taken as the system. Two types of optimization models, i.e., linear programming, and dynamic programming (continuous and discontinuous) were used for preliminary design purposes. The simulation technique was used for further screening. The linear programming model is most suitable for finding reservoir capacity. Dynamic programming (continuous and discontinuous models) may be used for further refining the output targets and finding the possible reservoir carry-over storages, respectively. The simulation should then be used to obtain the near optimum values of the design variables.
