    Description: One of the effective factors in cyst production on Artemia culture ponds is the number of oviparous females and density of biomass in view of adult's weight per liter of ponds water. In this study, the effect of oviparous female's abundance (Reproductive Females lit^-1) on daily cyst yields with using the ANOVA and correlation Analytical method were assayed. The result indicated that, with presence the small number of oviparous females (less than five Ind lit^-1) and Artemia density (between 0/1 to 0/2g/ lit) on culture ponds, the cyst yields at first sixty days culture period (160 Kg.dw/ha) were more than yields that harvested at three months later (47 Kg.dw/ha) and on the second three months of cultural period despite of presence the larger number of oviparous females (more than twenty Ind/lit) and presence the same Artemia population density, the daily cyst yields was declined.(Sig=0.000).

    Description: Estimation of Artemia resources on Uromieh Lake during (years2002-2003) showed huge reduction of Artemia cysts and biomass stocks than the previous years. Reduction of average annual precipitation in west Azerbaijan province during last 6 years than previous years from 32centimeter to 21centimeter has reduced the annual entered waters from the lakes basin rivers into the lake from(3.5-4.0)billion cubic meters to(1.8)billion cubic meters. During this period the entered fresh water in to the lake has been reduced, however the evaporation rate from 5750 square kilometer of Lake Surface has been continued at 3to4billion cubic meters per year. In spite of the fact that there are more than 5 billion tons salts on Uromieh Lake and that about 2 billion cubic meters of lake water is decreased annually due to negative balance between entered water and evaporation rate from Lake Surface, the water salinity on the lake has increased From 220 g/l in 1999 up to high saturated level atthe present. Increasing salinity on lake water up to high saturated level has caused to salt precipitate on lakes bottom and the Ionic exchange between lake water and beds natural precipitates that necessary to provide needed ions to photosynthesis was interrupted, so that the quality and quantity of primary productions on the lake has decreased and the lake has change to oligotrophic condition and in some seasons the turbidity of the lake has increased up to 5 meters. Above mentioned integrated factors have reduced Artemia stocks on lake during a few last years and this has resulted in stopping the cysts and biomass harvesting.

    Description: Limnological studies of the Zarrineh River have been performed in order to identify physicochemical and biological characteristics of this river. Water samples from 14 sites along the river length were examined monthly during a year. The results indicated the river was polluted by Saghez and Miandoab Cities sewage to the extent of poly saprob, the extent of pollution at other sites was within the limits of oligo saprob or meso saprob. The results also showed that all dissolved and mineral compositions in this river was safe for drinking but iron concentration and water hardness in the terminal sites near the Urmia Lake are higher than EPA standards for drinking . This cannot, however, pose serious problem for warm water fish culture activities. Domestic sewage seem to be the most important pollution source to this river. Although the self-purification capacity of this river seem to be high but large number of polluting sites along the river exceed this capacity.

    Description: The dynamics of Artemia population of Urmia Lake was investigated to provide the technical information, which is necessary for sustainable management of Artemia in Urmia Lake. The study covers different aspects comprising of monthly estimation of Artemia biomass and cysts, annual evaporation of Lake Water, average precipitation in catchment areas and also water turbidity in Urmia Lake, during the 2004-2007. Results showed dramatic decline in the Artemia population compared to the previous years, Reduction of average annual precipitation and increased water usage in Urmia Lake catchment area during last decade, has reduced the annual quantities of flowing waters to the Lake. Although the estimated trophic state index (TSI) which indicated the mesotrophic condition during the studied period, therefore, exceeding salinity to higher than the saturated level had adverse effects on phytoplankton growth. Furthermore, nutrient transfer by the rivers to the lake caused to produce of halophilic bacteria and other obtrusive protozoas which has created very unsuitable condition for Artemia grazing. These events confirm the role of salinity as a major environmental factor that affects Artemia resources in their natural habitats. It can be proposed that a method to manage the lake ecosystem and its Artemia population through construction dividers, such as dikes between the north and south parts of the lake to reduce the salinity at some parts of Urmia Lake will be applicable.
