Description / Table of Contents:
After the first isolation of nickel(II) diketone chelates of dibenzoylmethane and 2-ace-tylcycloheptanone as two differently coloured isomeric compounds (green and red, resp. brown) we have now prepared some other nickel(II) chelates with β-diketones of very different substitution and structure. It is shown that some of the diketones form both isomeric compounds, whereas others give only one of the both isomers. Magnetic and spectrophotometric work showed that the green paramagnetic chelates are of the complex type [Ni3O12], according to a trimeric association, the red, resp. brown diamagnetic chelates are of the monomeric structural type [NiO4].The different behaviour of β-diketones in the course of chelating with nickel(II) ions is based on the different effects of substituents at the chelate ring, which are able to influence the conformation of the chelate ring in the sense of favouring or hindering the association.
Notes:
