Description / Table of Contents:
The kinetics of reduction of Ag2Si2O5 have been investigated in a constant hydrogen flow at 0°, 20°, 40°, 60°, and 80°C. In this reduction, metallic silver and phyllosilicic acid, H2Si2O5, are firstly formed. The order of the reaction relative to the amount of nonreduced silver has been found to increase continuously from 0 to 2 with increasing temperature. The retardation corresponding to the increasing order of reaction is probably due to the condensation of phyllosilicic acid which increases with the temperature. The silver crystallites between the layers of the silicic acid grow into platelets with their octahedral planes, (111), in two different orientations parallel to the (010)-planes of the original silver silicate, i. e. parallel to the [Si2O5]-layers. The high catalytic activity of this carrier catalyst is probably due to the favourable development of the (111)-planes in silver.
Notes:
