Polarographic Investigations in Organic Solvents. IV. The Reduction of the Isomers of the molybdato Silicic AcidsThe α- and β-isomers of heteropoly acids can be determined simultanously by AC-rapid polarography in ethanolic LiCl solution. Transformation rates and energies of the β → α a molybdato silicic acids (SiMo) have been evaluated. Reduction takes place in three steps to the 2e-, 4e-, and 6e-„heteropoly-blue“. β-SiMo will be reduced at a more negative potential than α-SiMo, and this more negative than α-PMo. A metal field reduction will be found in front of the second step. The second and third polarographic signal therefore mark the reduction from 2e- to 4e- and from 2e- to 6e-heteropoly-blue. All reductions depend on having protons in the solutions. In the second step the protons may be replaced by Li+ ions. The only proton consuming steps of α-SiMo and α-PMo show a split of signals 2 and 3 which may be interpreted as geometric charge isomerism. Reduction of the dioctylammonium ion associates of the α- and β-SiMo in the two phase systeme chloroform/1 n HCl leads to different products: 2e-α-SiMo blue remaining in the organic layer and 4e-β-SiMo blue, which passes into the aqueous phase. This is a way to get quantitative distinction between the isomers, too. Both methods have been use to demonstrate, that the β-SiMo - only known in solution until now - can be prepared as solid dioctylammoniumsalt and resolved unchanged.
Notes:
