Notes: A complete theory of Gaussian beam scattering by a sphere is exposed. It is a generalization of the Lorenz-Mie Theory to the case of Gaussian beam illumination. The spherical, isotropic and homogeneous scatterer may be located anywhere with respect to the beam. The Bromwich Scalar Potentials are used to solve the scattering problem and expressions are obtained for the scattered field (both in the near field and far field regions), the scattered intensities and the phase angle. In the limit of special cases the expressions agree with previous works restricted to more particular problems.

Notes: Starting from the expressions of the Generalized Lorenz Mie Theory (GLMT), this paper first presents numerical results for the specific gn coefficients involved in Gaussian beam scattering theory. These results are computed in the special case where on-axis scatterers are considered. The localized interpretation of the gn coefficients is then developped and discussed, leading to significant simplifications of the numerical computations. Finally, this localized interpretation is used for comparisons of the Generalized Lorenz Mie Theory with other experimental and theoretical data.

Notes: This paper presents some characteristics of the light scattered by one spherical particle illuminated by a Gaussian beam. The basic theory is a generalization of the Lorenz-Mie Theory. The fact that the computations can be easily carried out on a micro-computer is pointed out.

Notes: MUSCAT is a Monte Carlo code for numerical simulation of Multiple Scattering. Only the general restrictive assumptions of the steady-state, scalar radiative transfer equation are required, hence the MUSCAT code can deal with a broad field of applications. The algorithm follows the physical phenomena as closely as possible and realistic 3-D problems can be handled without geometric simplifications. Special care has been devoted to the analysis and validation of the pseudo-random generator subroutine. Global validations of the code in 1-D and 2-D geometries have been successfully carried out. An example of application is reported concerning 3-D studies of visibility in foggy weather.

Notes: The principle of the dual burst technique (DBT) based on phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) is proposed for simultaneous particle refractive index, size and velocity measurements. This technique used the trajectory effects in PDA systems to separate the two contributions of the different scattering processes. In the case of forward scattering and refracting particles, it is shown that from the phase of the reflected contribution, the particle diameter can be deduced, whereas from the refracted contribution the particle refractive index and velocity can be obtained. Furthermore, the intensity ratio of these two scattering processes can be used for absorption measurements. Simulations based on generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and experimental tests using monodispersed droplets of different refractive indices and absorption coefficients have validated this technique.

Notes: The effects of the particle trajectories on phase Doppler measurements were explored numerically using generalized Lorenz-Mie theory. Computations were performed for a commercial phase Doppler system and various schemes for elimination of the trajectory effects were examined. It is shown that these effects cannot be completely suppressed if the ratio of the two measured phase shifts from a single receiving unit is used to validate the measurements. On the other hand, the errors due to particle trajectories can be eliminated satisfactorily by employing an additional receiving unit, which allows one to detect the asymmetry of the scattered light pattern due to displacement of the particle trajectory from the centre of the measuring volume. A preliminary experimental evaluation of this method is presented and discussed.

Notes: A new-generation velocimeter/sizemeter is described. Size measurement is based on the top-hat beam technique. Velocity measurement is carried out by using laser Doppler velocimetry. Advantages and limitations of the top-hat beam technique are discussed and compared with other techniques (pedestal, visibility, phase Doppler). Bubble diagnosis in a turbulent pipe flow is reported.

Notes: The theory of interaction between a shaped beam and an infinite cylinder arbitrarily located in it is presented. The same approach as for the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory is first used. In particular, variable separability is assumed in solving the wave equation. The special case of Gaussian beams, however, implies that, unexpectedly, a special class of non-separable scalar potentials is required for some kinds of beams.

Notes: After having recalled basic theoretical results concerning the extension of generalized Lorenz-Mie theory to the case of multilayered spheres, results connected with phase-Doppler anemometry are considered, showing the influence of Gaussian beam intensity profiles on the light scattering properties of these particles. Particular emphasis is placed on the case of water-coated carbon core particles, for which the possibility of obtaining simultaneous size measurements of the core and outer diameters is discussed. The sensitivity of the technique to particles with a refractive index profile is also considered, showing that this technique is more sensitive to changes in the average refractive index of the particles than to refractive index profiles, such as produced by high pressure and temperature stresses, at least for the studied geometry.
