Description: A technique has been developed to dynamically calibrate fine wire thermocouples of 0.025 mm diam and smaller to 1625 K in less than 10 sec. In this method, the varying physical parameters present under typical dynamic heating conditions are simulated, and therefore, wire deterioration can be related to time, temperature, pressure, and atmosphere. A description of the equipment and procedures is given along with the preliminary results that correlate well with thermoelectric theory.

Description: A method for determining the refractive index profile of thick phase gratings in linear electrooptic crystals is presented. This method also determines the effective photovoltaic electric field and the relative contributions of diffusion and drift during hologram recording. The method requires only a knowledge of the modulation ratio during hologram recording and the fundamental and the higher-order diffraction efficiencies of the grating. As an illustration of the method, the refractive index profile, the effective photovoltaic field, and the relative contributions of diffusion and drift are determined from experimental measurements for a lithium niobate holographic grating.

Description: A modulated, infrared radiant energy source was developed to calibrate an airborne nadir-viewing pressure modulated radiometer to be used to detect from Earth orbit trace gases in the troposphere. The technique used an 8 cm long, 0.005 cm diameter platinum-iridium wire as an isothermal, thin line radiant energy source maintained at 1200 K. A + or - 20 K signal, oscillating at controllable frequencies from dc to 20 Hz, was superimposed on it. This periodic variation of the line source energy was used to verify the pressure modulated radiometer's capability to distinguish between the signal variations caused by the Earth's background surface and the signal from the atmospheric gases of interest.

Description: Construction and calibration are reported for a 6-sq m scintillation counter consisting of two pieces of clear Lucite optically joined along a common edge, sixteen squares of plastic scintillator optically coupled on top of the Lucite, and eight photomultiplier tubes for light collection. Calibration of this counter using an anticoincidence counter to exclude multiple particle events is described. Theoretical calculations for purely electromagnetic extensive air showers indicate that this counter should detect an average of 2.5 particles per event, while the calibration data yield about 1.8 particles per event. It is shown that the anticoincidence-counter calibration method must be used for counters with areas of more than a few square meters if calibration on the response from a single particle of an extensive air shower is desired.
