    Description: Improved sensitivity to light and uniformity of response has been obtained using various surface treatments of thinned CCDs. Procedures are described and some results are shown. The Lick Observatory data acquisition system is briefly described. A new thermoelectrically-cooled CCD camera for telescope guiding has been designed and built. The camera is described and preliminary results at the telescope are given.

    Description: A nuclear emulsion detector known as the Apollo Light Flash Moving Emulsion Detector (ALFMED) was designed: (1) to record tracks of primary cosmic rays; (2) to provide time-of-passage information via a relative plate translation technique; (3) to provide particle trajectory information; and (4) to fit into a masklike device that could be located about the head and eyes of an astronaut. An ALFMED device was worn by an astronaut observing light flashes for 60 minutes on each of the last two Apollo missions. During the Apollo 17 experiment seventeen separate flashes were reported by the observer. With one-third of the total plate area completely analyzed, two definite correlations have been found between Z greater than 8 cosmic ray nuclei traversing an eye and the reports of visual sensations.

    Description: A review of general principles and operational procedures illustrates how the typical passive user and omni receiving antenna can recover Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) information from a low altitude navigation satellite system for clock calibration and synchronization. Detailed discussions of concepts and theory of the receiver design are presented. The importance of RF correlation of the received and local PN encoded sequences is emphasized as a means of reducing delay uncertainties of the instrumentation to values compatible with nanosecond to submicrosecond PTTI objectives. Two receiver configurations were fabricated for use in satellite-to-laboratory experiments. In one receiver the delay-locked loop for PN signals synchronization used a dithered amplitude detection process while the second receiver used a complex sums phase detection method for measurement of delay error. The necessity for compensation of Doppler shift is discussed. Differences in theoretical signal acquisition and tracking performance of the design concepts are noted.

    Description: The CCD detector and data handling system in regular use at Lick Observatory are described. A grism system has been installed on the automated Cassegrain spectrograph at the Shane 3-meter telescope. A very compact CCD cooling system has been developed using a commercial gas expansion refrigerator; the dewar is a cylinder 15 cm in diameter and 6 cm high. The data acquisition computer, an LSI 11/23 with 256 kbyte RAM, 160 Mbyte Winchester disk, and color video display, provides for FITS format magnetic tape storage as well as preliminary analysis of images and spectra. The 3-meter telescope spectrographic system uses a 500 x 500 pixel thinned CCD. Design information and operational experience for these detector systems are presented along with some results to illustrate the quality of the data being obtained and the current limitations of the CCD detectors and data system.

    Description: The Lick Observatory CCD data acquisition system is described, with some observational results to illustrate the system capability. The electronics for the CCD are subdivided into those attached to the dewar, a 'smart' controller near the dewar, and a computer connected by serial link to the smart controller. Software for the controller is in assembler code, while the software for data acquisition and on-line analysis is written in C and uses the UNIX operating system. The computers and controllers are programmed to recognize and operate several different types of CCD. Three separate instruments that use the CCDs are described briefly, together with examples of the data they produce.

    Description: The paper presents the design and predicted performance of a large acceptance (2 sq m sr) transition-radiation-Compton-scattering detector system which can be used to measure energy spectra up to several thousand Gev/nucleon for nuclei with Z between 6 and 28, as well as up to 40,000 GeV/nucleon for He. The following circumstances made such a detector system practicable: (1) transition radiation output is proportional to the square of particle charge; (2) output varies at least as rapidly as the square of Lorentz factor over the range from several hundred to several thousand.
