Description: A hemispherical open resonator has previously been used to make relative comparisons of the surface resistivity of metallic thin-film samples in the submillimeter wavelength region. This resonator is fed from a far-infrared laser via a small coupling hole in the center of the concave spherical mirror. The experimental arrangement, while desirable as a coupling geometry for monitoring weak emissions from the cavity, can lead to the introduction of spurious modes into the cavity. Sources of these modes are identified, and a simple alteration of the experimental apparatus to eliminate such modes is suggested.

Description: The development of a prototype Control Moment Gyroscope (CMG) is discussed. Physical characteristics and the results of functional testing are presented to demonstrate the level of system performance obtained. Particular attention is given to how the man-rated mission requirement influenced the choice of the materials, fabrication, and design details employed. Comparisons are made of the measured system responses against the prediction generated by computer simulation.

Description: A method for measuring the surface electrical resistance of small metallic samples at submillimeter wavelengths is presented which employs a qausi-optical hemispherical resonator fed by an optically pumped far-infrared laser. The small beam size at the sample, which serves as a plane mirror, allows measurements on samples with widths as small as 5 mm. The quality factor is high, and surface resistance losses are readily measurable.

Description: An experimental investigation of the time-dependent response of hot element wall shear stress gages in unsteady periodic air flows is reported. The study has focused on wall shear stress in laminar oscillating flows produced on a flat plate by a free stream velocity composed of a mean component and a superposed sinusoidal variation. Two types of hot element gages, platinum film and flush wire, were tested for values of reduced frequency ranging from 0.14 to 2.36. Values of the phase angle of the wall shear stress variation relative to the free stream velocity, as indicated by the hot element gages, are compared with numerical prediction. The comparisons show that the gages indicate a wall shear stress variation that lags the true variation, and that the gages will also not indicate the correct wall shear stress variation in periodic turbulent flows.

Description: We are currently developing an instrument free from optical components to measure the full-disk solar spectrum in the extreme ultraviolet regime covering wavelengths from 75-500 A. The instrument, which will be launched aboard a NASA Black Brant sounding rocket in September 1992, consists of a windowless noble gas ionization cell followed by a toroidal electrostatic analyzer to spatially disperse photoelectrons as a function of their energies. A microchannel plate based position sensitive detector will be used to detect individual electrons, indirectly returning the solar EUV spectrum.

Description: An extensive program exists for the systematic sampling and analysis of lubricants in U.S. Air Force aircraft engines. The sudden development of excessive engine wear can usually be detected on the basis of monitoring the concentration of several key metallic elements for each aircraft engine. In many cases even the specific fault within an engine can be recognized. The two types of equipment which are currently being employed for the conduction of oil analyses make use of atomic emission or atomic absorption spectroscopy. In both cases, heavy, large, and relatively fragile pieces of equipment are involved. Difficulties concerning the transportation of these devices have led to the development of a small, sturdy, and easily portable wearmetal analyzer. The analyzer makes use of an X-ray fluorescence technique.

Description: Methods and devices for installing in a tubular shaft multiple strain gages are disclosed with focus on a method and a device for pneumatically forcing strain gages into seated engagement with the internal surfaces of a tubular shaft in an installation of multiple strain gages in a tubular shaft. The strain gages or other electron devices are seated in a template-like component which is wrapped about a pneumatically expansible body. The component is inserted into a shaft and the body is pneumatically expanded after a suitable adhesive was applied to the surfaces.

Description: The NaI(Tl) Anger camera is a natural candidate for a position sensitive detector in imaging of astrophysical gamma-ray sources. Here laboratory measurements are presented of the response of a relatively thick (5.1 cm) NaI(Tl) Anger camera designed for coded aperture imaging in the 50 keV to 2 MeV energy range. A position resolution of 10.5 mm FWHM at 122 keV and 6.3 mm FWHM at 662 keV. The energy resolution was 7 percent FWHM at 662 keV. The ability of the detector to resolve the depth of the gamma-ray interaction and the use of this depth resolution to reduce back-incident and internal background is discussed.

Description: A high-speed, high-capacity digital data storage system has been developed for a new balloon-borne gamma-ray telescope. The system incorporates sophisticated, yet easy to use and economical consumer products: the portable video cassette recorder (VCR) and a relatively newer item - the digital audio processor. The in-flight recording system employs eight VCRs and will provide a continuous data storage rate of 1.4 megabits/sec throughout a 40 hour balloon flight. Data storage capacity is 25 gigabytes and power consumption is only 10 watts.

Description: A functional design study for an electrostatic camera system for application to planetary missions is presented. The electrostatic camera can produce and store a large number of pictures and provide for transmission of the stored information at arbitrary times after exposure. Preliminary configuration drawings and circuit diagrams for the system are illustrated. The camera system's size, weight, power consumption, and performance are characterized. Tradeoffs between system weight, power, and storage capacity are identified.
