    Description: Since Seasat carried the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) into space, shortly followed by the SMMR on Nimbus 7, a new type of data source on atmospheric water vapor and other meteorological parameters has been available for analysis of weather systems over the ocean. Since 1987, the Scanning Multichannel Microwave/Imager (SMM/I) has provided similar data. A collection of work using this data is presented.

    Description: Based on a geometric optics model and the assumption of an isotropic Gaussian surface slope distribution, the component of ocean surface microwave emissivity variation due to large-scale surface roughness is parameterized for the frequencies and approximate viewing angle of the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager. Independent geophysical variables in the parameterization are the effective (microwave frequency dependent) slope variance and the sea surface temperature. Using the same physical model, the change in the effective zenith angle of reflected sky radiation arising from large-scale roughness is also parameterized. Independent geophysical variables in this parameterization are the effective slope variance and the atmospheric optical depth at the frequency in question. Both of the above model-based parameterizations are intended for use in conjunction with empirical parameterizations relating effective slope variance and foam coverage to near-surface wind speed. These empirical parameterizations are the subject of a separate paper.

    Description: This review covers the relationship between remotely sensed microwave data and data obtained in situ or from earth-based remote-sensing systems, both for validation of algorithms and as supplemental information for deriving a geophysical quantity. Parameters obtained from satellite microwave radiometers, the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer, and the Special Sensor Microwave Imager are emphasized. These include sea-surface temperature and wind speed, integrated atmospheric water vapor, cloud liquid water, and rain rate.

    Description: A twin propeller-vane anemometer developed at the University of British Columbia was successfully used for unattended measurement of atmospheric turbulence over extended periods of time during moderate to high winds in the presence of sea spray. In this paper, a new design in twin propeller-vane anemometers is introduced. The instrument consists of two Gill anemometers mounted on a vane. The propeller shafts, one pointing up and the other pointing down, make an angle of 45 deg with the horizontal (hence, the name K-Gill). In addition to the desirable characteristics of the earlier design the K-Gill has symmetry, so that updraft and downdraft winds are measured with equal sensitivity. An algorithm for obtaining the vertical and downstream horizontal components of the wind velocity is described. Various sources of error and their magnitudes are discussed.
