    Description: The initial testing performed on the Hughes Metal Oxide Semiconductor Direct Readout (MOS DRO) with a Si:In extrinsic infrared array is described. The testing to date was of a screening nature and the results are primarily qualitative rather than quantitative. At a later date the performance optimization phase will be initiated. An encouraging result is that this response is strongly dependent on the detector temperature, to the extent that thermal transients introduced during the chip readout will affect the performance. A responsivity of 1 A/W at 2.2 microns with a bias of 15 volts, which is well below what is optimum bias, was obtained.

    Description: This paper describes the design and performance of a set of cosmic-ray particle experiments for the Pioneer 10/11 and Helios A/B space missions. These experiments had to be very light-weight, low-power and electronically sophisticated in order to meet the spacecraft and scientific requirements. Both sets of missions use several solid-state detector telescopes to measure protons from 100 KeV to 800 MeV and heavier ions up to Neon at 200 MeV per nucleon. Good performance is required for 7-8 years, and the system must tolerate large vibration loads and ionizing radiation doses up to 500,000 rads.

    Description: This paper describes the design and performance of a cosmic ray particle experiment for the Helios A/B space missions. This experiment had to be very lightweight, low power and electronically sophisticated in order to meet the spacecraft and scientific requirements, and very similar to those on the Pioneer 10 and 11 missions to Jupiter. Both sets of missions use several solid-state detector telescopes to measure protons from 100 KeV to 800 MeV per nucleon. Additionally, the Helios experiment includes a proportional counter to monitor the solar X-ray activity. The experiment has functioned quite well for 5 months in space, and large quantities of data are now being received.

    Description: It is shown that large format PtSi Schottky diode infrared arrays, the Hughes 256 X 256 hybrid Schottky array in particular, are competitive alternatives to the smaller format photovoltaic arrays for ground-based astronomy. The modest quantum efficiency of the PtSi compared to the photovoltaic devices is more than compensated for by the larger format. The use of hybrid technology yields effective fill factors of nearly 100 percent, and the low dark current, noise, excellent imaging characteristics, cost, and solid nitrogen operating temperature add to the effectiveness of this array for ground-based imaging. In addition to discussing the characteristics of this array, researchers present laboratory test data and astronomical results achieved at Kitt Peak.

    Description: The paper presents a review of the Air Force Infrared Sky Survey with a discussion of the current status of the survey and an account of efforts to verify results contained in the AFCRL and AFGL catalogs. An overview of the AFGL catalog and subsets is given; 71% of the sources listed in the AFGL catalog are identified with sources in the Two Micron Sky Survey. Combining the data in the AFGL and TMSS catalogs yields information on the energy distributions of the brighter IR sources over four octaves. Attention is then given to studies of particular classes of objects found in the AFGL catalog, concentrating on objects not identified with stars in the TMSS or the Catalogue of Bright Stars. Finally, a summary is given of the relative populations of various classes of infrared sources found in the AFGL catalog, including a discussion of its extragalactic content.

    Description: Photometric data of the once-every-27 yr eclipse of the Epsilon Auriga F supergiant are reported. The data were taken on 28 nights from July 1982-May 1984 and covered the 1.25-20 microns region. The secondary object was identified at 5, 10, and 20 microns when the eclipse removed 48 percent of the F star's light. The data indicated that the secondary is a compact object surrounded by a large optically thick cloud, with a luminosity under 0.01 of the primary. The secondary's mass is, however, more than 14 solar masses.

    Description: High-resolution (45 km/sec) observations of the 2.12 micrometers molecular hydrogen emission line in the Orion Nebula reveal a single feature with delta V (FWHP) not exceeding 30 km/sec at a LSR velocity of + 9.5 + or - 4 km/sec. The results support the suggestion that the H2 emission is collisionally excited in a thin shock-heated layer inside the cool molecular cloud. For a spherical geometry the shock velocity is, therefore, constrained to be at most 15 km/sec.

    Description: The Hughes 20 x 64 Si:As impurity band conduction arrays designed for ground-based and spaceborne astronomy observations is described together with experiments performed at NOAO to test these arrays. Special attention is given to the design and the characteristics of the test system and to the test methods. The initial tests on two columns of one array indicate that the array is easy to operate and performed satisfactorily.
