Description: Description of the design features and operation of a new multichannel solar spectrometer to be used for ground-based observations of active regions whose X-ray and EUV emissions are studied by the OSO-H and other satellites. The electronic systems associated with the instrument include (1) an electrooptical guider controlled by a punched paper tape capable of making raster scans of selected portions of the solar disk, (2) a programmer unit that applies paper-tape commands to various portions of the instrument, (3) a closed-loop servosystem for the vacuum heliostat, (4) stepping motor controls for spectral scans, (5) a 40-channel photomultiplier readout, and (6) a magnetometer. Preliminary solar observations indicate satisfactory performance of the system.

Description: The first crystal X-ray polarimeter to be used for X-ray astronomy is described. Polarization is measured by modulation of the X rays diffracted at an average 45 deg glancing angle from large, curved graphite crystal panels as these rotate about an axis parallel to the incident X-ray flux. Arrangement of the crystal panels, the design of the detector, and the signal-processing circuitry were optimized to minimize systematic effects produced by off-axis pointing of the rocket and cosmic ray induced events. The in-flight performance of the instrument in relation to the observed background signal is discussed.

Description: A spherical probe having five surface mounted silicon pressure sensors is described. The probe is 0.2 inches in diameter yielding a frequency response above 30 kHz. A scheme is described for retrieving from the five pressure signals the stagnation and static pressures, Mach number and flow angles in two planes. The calibrations forming the base for this procedure, obtained from steady state tests, are given in the form of polynomials in the two flow angles. A method for compensating the silicon pressure sensors for thermal effects is given. Typical data obtained in the MIT Blowdown Compressor are presented in raw form and after reduction to flow angles, Mach number and stagnation pressure.

Description: An elongated drying chamber is provided with transport means for carrying photographic sheet material edgewise with the sheets in end-to-end relationship past a plurality of tubes that issue drying air streams. The tubes are slotted a distance equal to substantially the full width of the sheet material for complete, gentle drying by sheets of air. A common plenum supplies the tubes with heated air; the air is directed from the tube slots at a pronounced angle to the sheet surface to provide for arraying the tubes close to the surface for maximum drying effect while minimizing the danger of mechanical interference between the edges of the sheets and the slots in the tubes. The driver for the transport is housed in an enclosure between the plenum and the drying chamber; an air return duct is provided along another side to complete insulation of the drying chamber from ambient conditions.

Notes: An experimental investigation of an impinging water jet freezing on a melting solid surface has been carried out. Attention was focused on the stagnation region of an axisymmetric jet. In the experiment, a water jet was directed upward against the lower end of a meltable rod, having a diameter about twice that of the jet orifice. Solid octane (m.p. - 56.5°C) and solid mercury (m.p. - 38.9°C) served as the meltable materials. A laminar-axisymmetric flow model was developed to describe melting heat transfer in the presence of jet solidification within the impingement region. Measurements of the melting rate and conditions for the onset of jet solidification were found to agree quite well with the values predicted with this model.

Notes: Growth and dissolution rates of nickel sulfate α-hexahydrate were measured as functions of the concentration driving force in a laboratory-scale fluidized-bed crystallizer for the temperature range 35° to 50°C and the crystal size range 0.5 to 4.0 mm.Dissolution rates at a given temperature and crystal size were first order in the concentration driving force. Growth rates were about one-quarter of dissolution rates and depended on a higher exponent (around 1.3) of the concentration driving force. This exponent was not significantly affected by variations in crystal size, but decreased as temperature increased. The apparent variation of growth rate itself with crystal size at constant temperature was slight. Growth rates were found to be insensitive to solids concentration.

Notes: Effects of molecular size and configuration on hindered diffusion were examined by measuring diffusion of two series of uncharged macromolecules through track-etch membranes with uniform and well-defined pore geometry. At any given Stokes-Einstein radius, diffusivities in small pores were lower for ficoll (crosslinked structure) than for dextran (more nearly linear structure).

Notes: A process has been developed by which very high-modulus semicrystalline polymer films can be extruded continuously from a melt. This is accomplished by controlled cooling of the melt in a two-stage flow channel. A temperature gradient along the flow channel quenches the melt prior to an area reduction in which the polymer undergoes solid-state orientation. Analysis of high-density polyethylene tapes extruded by this process shows that they have properties similar to samples hydrostatically extruded at 120°C. Infrared analysis was used to determine both the degree of crystallinity and degree of orientation in these tapes as well as previously prepared hydrostatically extruded samples.
