Beschreibung: A concept is presented for a high-resolution EUV/soft-X-ray imager that has much in common with the medical imaging procedure of tomography. The resulting instrument is compatible with a simpler, less costly spin-axis-stabilized spacecraft. To demonstrate the fidelity of the reconstruction procedure, the observation and reconstruction is simulated to compare the results with the original image.

Beschreibung: The development of a long-wave infrared optical simulator facilitates evaluation of the end-to-end performance of long wavelength infrared (LWIR) focal plane arrays (FPAs) in a system-like environment. This simulator provides selectable structured scene inputs to a focal plane module or array. Background irradiances as low as 10 exp 10 photons/sq cm s are achievable when the simulator is cooled with liquid helium. The optical simulator can generate single or multiple targets of controllable intensities, and uniform or structured background irradiances. The infrared scenes can be viewed in a stationary mode or dynamically scanned across the focal plane.

Beschreibung: A task order was written by the High Resolution, High Frame Rate Video Technology (HHVT) project engineers to study data compression techniques that could be applied to the HHVT system. Specifically, the goals of the HHVT data compression study are to accomplish the following: (1) Determine the downlink capabilities of the Space Shuttle and Space Station Freedom to support HHVT data (i.e., determine the maximum data rates and link availability); (2) Determine current and projected capabilities of high speed storage media to support HHVT data by determining their maximum data acquisition/transmission rates and volumes; (3) Identify which experiment in the HHVT Users' Requirement data base need data compression, based on the experiments' imaging requirements; (4) Select the best data compression technique for each of these users by identifying a technique that provides compression but minimizes distortion; and (5) Investigate state-of-the-art technologies for possible implementation of selected data compression techniques. Data compression will be needed because of the high data rates and larger volumes of data that will result from the use of digitized video onboard the Space Shuttle and Space Station Freedom.

Beschreibung: The Lambda Point Experiment (LPE) is one of the instruments included in the U.S. Microgravity Payload Mission 1 planned for one of the Space Shuttle flights in 1992. The objective of the experiment is to measure the heat capacity of liquid helium within a narrow interval around the transition between superfluid and normal helium (the lambda point) with an unprecedented temperature resolution of about 10 to the -10th. Multiple technical challenges are presented in the areas of structural support, safety analysis, and modal frequency tests. This paper describes the technical challenges of JPL's multidisciplinary involvement in support of these experiments in microgravity.

Beschreibung: In Dec. 1991 TITAN SPECTRON successfully completed its six year effort to design, build, space qualify, test, and deliver the Laser Transmitter Module (LTM) for NASA LaRC's LITE program. The delivered LTM is a three color Q-switched flashlamp pumped Nd:YAG laser that is described as the first true world-class lidar in space. The preliminary design and verification tests results were first presented at the 14th International Laser Radar Conference (ILRC) in 1988. This paper describes not only the delivered product but also the verification and space qualification processes that resulted in the world's first space qualified high powered laser system for environmental exploration from space. Video of the laser operating in a Class 100 clean room and subsystems undergoing 10 G vibration tests will provide a vivid illustration of the key elements that separate a space qualified system from its laboratory counterpart. Flight laser performance measurements form the baseline in post-delivery test results to be presented at this conference.

Beschreibung: The present study, which has demonstrated the feasibility of using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence methods to ascertain boundary layer temperature distributions in real time for hypersonic vehicles in atmospheric flight, employs conventional optics in combination with novel time-resolved spectroscopy. The radiative lifetime and signal intensity involved, both of which are reduced by quenching, are adequate for measurement with state-of-the-art time-resolved fluorescence techniques, except for certain conditions associated with both the highest speeds and the lowest altitudes.
