    Notes: The treatment of the non-linear isotherm in chromatography by one of the authors [1] is extended to other cases of practical interest. The original paper dealt with the case of an initially thin zone resulting in a Poisson distribution the asymmetry of which is a function of the plate number and the non-linearity constant. The present work shows that the same relations apply to initially thick zones and to the cases of washing and deposition leading to simple relations for breakthrough curves. For significantly non-linear isotherms other quasi-Gaussian distributions can give a better fit.

    Genetic reactivation of cone photoreceptors restores visual responses in retinitis pigmentosa (2010)

    Description: Retinitis pigmentosa refers to a diverse group of hereditary diseases that lead to incurable blindness, affecting two million people worldwide. As a common pathology, rod photoreceptors die early, whereas light-insensitive, morphologically altered cone photoreceptors persist longer. It is unknown if these cones are accessible for therapeutic intervention. Here, we show that expression of archaebacterial halorhodopsin in light-insensitive cones can substitute for the native phototransduction cascade and restore light sensitivity in mouse models of retinitis pigmentosa. Resensitized photoreceptors activate all retinal cone pathways, drive sophisticated retinal circuit functions (including directional selectivity), activate cortical circuits, and mediate visually guided behaviors. Using human ex vivo retinas, we show that halorhodopsin can reactivate light-insensitive human photoreceptors.     Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection of bone marrow dendritic cells from multiple myeloma patients (1997)

    Description: Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) was found in the bone marrow dendritic cells of multiple myeloma patients but not in malignant plasma cells or bone marrow dendritic cells from normal individuals or patients with other malignancies. In addition the virus was detected in the bone marrow dendritic cells from two out of eight patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), a precursor to myeloma. Viral interleukin-6, the human homolog of which is a growth factor for myeloma, was found to be transcribed in the myeloma bone marrow dendritic cells.     Description: Vasoactive intestinal peptide, a smooth-muscle relaxant neuropeptide with neurotransmitter properties, was relaxed during electrical field stimulation of guinea pig trachea. The amount released correlated with the degree of relaxation, and the release was blocked by tetrodotoxin. Prior incubation of the trachea with antiserum to vasoactive intestinal peptide reduced the relaxation.     Description: The innervation of acini and ducts of eccrine sweat glands by immunoreactive, vasoactive intestinal peptide-containing nerve fibers was sharply reduced in seven patients with cystic fibrosis compared to eight normal subjects.
