Notizen: Summary Over three years, theAdh and α-Gpdh loci have been studied in two cellar populations ofDrosophila melanogaster and in two field populations which were each near to one of the cellars. Analyses of gene frequencies indicate that the divergence among subpopulations is greater in theAdh locus than in the α-Gpdh locus. Selection for or againstAdh S allele acting on theIn(2L)t inversion influences of the α-Gpdh alleles. This phenomenon may contribute to explain the maintenance of theAdh and α-Gpdh polymorphism and of theIn(2L)t inversion.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Summary A Schizophyllum gene library was made in plasmid pRK9, Plasmids from this library were tested for their ability to complement several auxotrophic mutations of Escherichia coli. The goal was to isolate a Schizophyllum auxotrophic gene that could be used to transform a corresponding Schizophyllum auxotrophic mutant to prototrophy. Complementation was observed only for E. coli trpC indole 3-glycerol phosphate synthetase (IGPS) and phosphoribosyl-anthranilate isomerase (PRAI) mutations. Plasmids with a Schizophyllum sequence coding for both IGPS and PRAI activities were recovered from E. coli transformants. Expression of the Schizophyllum gene (TRP1) in E. coli is probably dependent on the Serratia marcescens promoter of plasmid pRK9. The DNA sequence containing the Schizophyllum TRP1 gene was not obviously rearranged in cloning.

Notizen: Summary We have developed a routine way to isolate genes directly from the basidiomycete fungus, Schizophyllum commune. Plasmid DNA from a genomic gene library was used to isolate five specific genes by complementation of Schizophyllum mutations via transformation. The mutant strains were deficient in the ability to synthesize either adenine (ade2 and ade5), uracil (ural, encoding orotidine-5′-phosphate decarboxylase; OMPdecase), tryptophan (rpl, encoding indole-3-glycerol phosphate synthetase; IGPS) or para aminobenzoic acid (pab1). In each case, Southern analysis revealed that transformation to prototrophy was concomitant with the integration of vector sequence into the genome of the S. commune mutant. Total DNA from transformants was restricted, religated, and used to transform E. coli. Ampicillin resistant plasmids were recovered from E. coli and tested for their ability to transform the corresponding mutant of S. commune. Plasmids complementing the ade2, adeS, pabl, trpl, and ural mutations were recovered.

Notizen: Abstract Magnetic disaccommodation is investigated for ferrous ferrites with normal spinel structure. This study shows the presence of a new relaxation process in the temperature region IV (≃285 K) that has not been detected in inverse spinels. A numerical analysis of the isochronal spectra reveals that it is composed of two simple Debye processes with activation energies close to 0.75 eV and 0.80 eV, and preexponential factors 3×10−13 s. This relaxation is attributed to the formation of an induced anisotropy due to jumps of B-Fe ions into vacancies (as process III), but in presence of a divalent cation occupying an A-site.

Notizen: Abstract Isothermal disaccommodation curves in vacancy-doped magnetite at room temperature show a typical Richter-type behaviour. Magnetic susceptibility decreases asymptotically according to a relaxation time of about 102 s, which is analyzed in terms of a progressive stabilization of the domains walls. The relaxation strength, vacancies and the restoring pressure on the Bloch walls are closely related.

Notizen: Abstract. The sinus venosus of the elasmobranch heart is characterized by the presence of large bundles of unmyelinated nerve fibres that bulge into the cardiac lumen, below the endocardium. In the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula), these fibres contain numerous dense-core membrane-bounded granules of about 200 nm in diameter. Most intramural ganglion cells of the sinus venosus also show densely packed granules similar to those found in the subendocardial fibres. We have observed strong substance-P-like immunoreactivity in the large fibre bundles and in the perikarya of the ganglion cells. Preabsorption of the antisera with fragment 7–11 of substance P has shown that the antisera recognize the tachykinin canonic sequence. Our findings suggest that an undetermined tachykinin is secreted in the elasmobranch heart, and that it is probably released into the blood stream in the context of a little-known neuroendocrine system.

    Schlagwort(e): Pollen analysis ; Late-glacial ; Holocene ; Iberian peninsula
Quelle: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
    Thema: Klassische Archäologie , Biologie
Notizen: Abstract This paper presents the results of pollen analyses from organic sediments of seven cores (299 spectra) in a mountainous area of the north-west Iberian peninsula. The pollen diagrams, supported by seven14C dates, are used to construct a regional pollen sequence covering the main stages of vegetation dynamics, from the last phases of the Late-glacial until the present. During the Late-glacial Interstadial an important development of cryophilous forests (Betula andPinus) was recorded, although various mesophilous and thermophilous tree elements were also present. The Younger Dryas, palynologically clearly defined, is characterized by an important reduction in tree pollen percentages and the expansion of steppe formations (Poaceae andArtemisia). At the beginning of the Holocene, there was an expansion ofQuercus and a spread of other trees, which combined to give a vegetation cover of varied composition but dominated by mixed deciduous forests. Such forest formations prevailed in these mountains until 3000 years ago, when successive deforestation phases are recorded at various times as a result of increased farming activity. The results are compared with data from other mountainous areas in the northern Iberian peninsula and southern France.

Notizen: Abstract The dynamics of vegetation in the North Iberian Peninsula have been historically established from peaty and lacustrine records obtained in strongly continental mountainous areas. Pollen records located in areas with a more oceanic climate, have allowed a more precise evaluation of the changes and differences in the vegetation development of the various biogeographical areas in the North Iberian Peninsula, during the Late-glacial and Holocene. It was found that: (1) The vegetation of the Cantabrian–Atlantic province in northern Iberian Peninsula responded to climatic changes during the last 16000 years. (2) Tree vegetation declined during the Oldest Dryas, with steppe vegetation in the interior and cryophilous vegetation along the coast. (3) During the time of the Lateglacial Interestadial, lowlands, arboreal vegetation was dominant in the landscape (Pinus, Betula, Quercus, Corylus). (4) During the Younger Dryas the differences between coast and interior are less obvious. (5) During the Holocene oceanic decidious forests of Quercus robur, Corylus avellana, Tilia sp. and Fagus sylvatica were present along the coast. At low altitudes, in the interior, forests of Quercus robur / pyrenaica, enclaves of pine woods and Mediterranean types of forest (Quercus ilex, Olea europea) were present. At higher altitudes Pinus (P. sylvestris and P. uncinata) or mixed forests of Pinus and Betula were dominant.

Notizen: Abstract Studies of short or medium range geographic variations play an increasing role in ecological genetics, and sensitive techniques are required to detect them. In this respect, two sampling techniques were compared inD. melanogaster. The biological data were provided by the analysis of four natural populations from the same geographic area, Spain (one) and Southern France (three), for four morphometrical traits: abdomen and thoracic pigmentation, and wing and thorax lengths. Traits were measured on wild living females and on their progeny reared in the laboratory at 25°C. For progeny analyses, two techniques were compared: the usual isofemale line technique, sib families issued from a single female, and a new isogroup technique, the progeny produced by a group of 20 wild-collected parents. Large phenotypic variations were observed in wild living flies, corresponding to the unstability of natural environmental conditions during their development. Among laboratory grown flies, variations were much smaller. Between isogroups, differences were small, due to sampling error and some common environment effects. Variations between lines were much greater, thus demonstrating a strong genetic component. When different populations have to be compared, the isogroup technique should be preferred since, for the same amount of work, the lesser variability between groups provides a more precise characterization of the population means.
