An improved preparation of 2,2′-bipyridine-6-carboxaldehyde 1 provides this compound in good yield for the further syntheses of oligo-(2,2′-bipyridyl)pyrazines 6-8, new ligands for supramolecular metallorganic complexes. According to 1H-NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic studies, the bis(2,2′-bipyridyl) compound 6 exists in a helical conformation in solution and in the solid state. The structure of the tetrakis(2,2′-bipyridyl) compound 8 is also confirmed through its crystal structure.
